Health-related quality of life after interval cytoreductive surgery with or without hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) in patients with stage III ovarian cancer
ConclusionThe addition of HIPEC to interval CRS does not negatively impact HRQoL in patients with stage III ovarian cancer who are treated with interval CRS. These HRQoL results, together with the improvement in RFS and OS, support the viability of HIPEC as an important treatment option in this patient population.ClinicalTrials.gov numberNCT00426257.EudraCT number2006-003466-34. Comparison of the diagnostic performances of core needle biopsy in myxoid versus non-myxoid tumors
ConclusionOur study suggests that CNB is useful for myxoid soft tissue tumors of the extremity, with regard to diagnosing malignancy and histologic grade. However, CNB was less useful for identifying histologic subtype in myxoid tumors than in non-myxoid tumors. (Source: European Journal of Surgical Oncology (EJSO))

Resection of GIST in the duodenum and proximal jejunum: A retrospective analysis of outcomes
ConclusionWith negative operational margins, limited resection is a safe and feasible procedure for duodenal and proximal jejunum GIST patients and unnecessary digestive reconstruction should be avoided. Considering the severe complication rate, resection for GISTs in D3 should be performed with care. (Source: European Journal of Surgical Oncology (EJSO))

Systemic chemotherapy before cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS/HIPEC) in patients with high-grade mucinous carcinoma peritonei of appendiceal origin
Publication date: Available online 9 May 2019Source: European Journal of Surgical OncologyAuthor(s): Carlos A. Munoz-Zuluaga, Mary Caitlin King, Panayotis Ledakis, Vadim Gushchin, Michelle Sittig, Carol Nieroda, Katherine Zambrano-Vera, Armando SardiAbstractBackgroundThe role of systemic chemotherapy (SC) before cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS/HIPEC) in appendiceal high-grade mucinous carcinoma peritonei (HGMCP) is controversial. We analyzed the effect of SC prior to CRS/HIPEC in HGMCP.MethodsA prospective database of CRS/HIPEC procedures for HGMCP without signet ring cells and with...

Surgical treatment of rectal cancer patients aged 80 years and older—a German nationwide analysis comparing short- and long-term survival after laparoscopic and open tumor resection
ConclusionGiven the results of this study, older rectal cancer patients are likely to benefit from the laparoscopic approach in the short term, and there are also no disadvantages in terms of long-term survival. Therefore, laparoscopy should be considered a standard procedure for older adults as well. (Source: European Journal of Surgical Oncology (EJSO))

Partial nephrectomy versus ablative therapies for cT1a renal masses: A Systematic Review and meta-analysis
ConclusionCompared to PN, ablation may have a significantly lower OS and higher local recurrence rates in selected patients, while CSS and DFS were comparable between the two treatments. On the other hand, ablation had a significantly decreased risk of perioperative complication and the potential advantage of long-term renal function preservation. More large randomized controlled trials are needed further to enhance the evidence of ablation in patients with small renal tumors. We believe that ablation is an attractive addition to the urologist's treatment options for small renal masses. (Source: European Journal of Surgical Oncology (EJSO))

Myoepithelioma of the soft tissue: A systematic review of clinical reports
ConclusionsSurgical resection was often sub-optimal. The long-term prognosis was poor, with a non-negligible rate of disease recurrence and metastasis. On average, the quality of available information is moderate. The centralization of patient information in large international registries is warranted to provide a better understanding of MES biology and ultimately improve patient outcomes. The systemic impact of a surgical procedure in older oncological patients
ConclusionsThe perioperative inflammatory response is related more to surgical characteristics rather than to preoperative factors (with the exception of disease stage). Elderly oncological patients undergoing longer lasting, intracavitary surgical procedures for more advanced disease stages develop the most intense inflammatory response.
