Sarcopenia is an independent unfavorable prognostic factor of non-small cell lung cancer after surgical resection: a comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis
Publication date: Available online 15 October 2018Source: European Journal of Surgical OncologyAuthor(s): Han-Yu Deng, Liang Hou, Panpan Zha, Kai-Li Huang, Lei PengAbstractBackgroundWhether sarcopenia has any impact on long-term survival of patients with surgically treated non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) remains unclear. We conducted a meta-analysis focusing on current topic comprehensively for the first time.MethodsWe systematically searched relevant studies in PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library up to July 3, 2018. Data of 5-year overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) rates as well as hazard ratio (HR)...

Prognostic significance of CA-125 re-elevation after interval debulking surgery in patients with advanced-stage ovarian cancer undergoing neoadjuvant chemotherapy

Ki-67 and presence of liver metastases identify different progression-risk classes in pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms (pNEN) undergoing resection

Intra-class correlation of Ki-67 values on pre-surgical biopsies vs. surgical specimens was 0.99 and Ki-67 classes were correctly identified in 97% of biopsies.Ki-67 and pr...

Biomarker panel predicts survival after resection in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma: A multi-institutional cohort study
This study aims to discover and validate the prognostic significance of a combinatorial panel of tumor biomarkers in patients with resected PDAC.MethodsPatients who underwent PDAC resection were included from a single institution discovery cohort and a multi-institutional validation cohort. Tumors in the discovery cohort were stained immunohistochemically for all nine shortlisted biomarkers. Biomarkers significantly associated with overall survival (OS) were reevaluated as a combinatorial panel in both discovery and validation cohorts for its prognostic significance.Results224 and 191 patients were included in the discover...

Publication date: Available online 12 October 2018Source: European Journal of Surgical OncologyAuthor(s): Kjetil SøreideAbstractSurgeons have taken to social media using Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram for both personal and professional purposes. In an age of global access to everything there is a risk for information overload, and thus a need to collate and curate. Hashtags going viral in have had a huge social influence, e.g. #ILookLikeASurgeon. SoMe has become an instrument for connecting, sharing and mentoring. It is a tool for educating the next generation of surgeons. For researchers and journals the...

Time dependent dynamics of wound complications after preoperative radiotherapy in Extremity Soft Tissue Sarcomas
ConclusionApproximately one-third of patients selected for preoperative RT develops a WC, typically in smoking, adipose patients with superficial tumor localizations in the lower extremity. Based upon the well-established superior long-term functional outcome, maintained excellent local control rates and the temporary nature of the WC issue, preoperative RT remains our preferred treatment. Although, in patients at high risk of WC, post-operative RT might be considered. (Source: European Journal of Surgical Oncology (EJSO))

The influence of breast cancer subtypes on axillary ultrasound accuracy: A retrospective single center analysis of 583 women
ConclusionSolely regarding sensitivity of AUS, our study could show significant differences between biological subtypes of breast cancer with lower sensitivity in Luminal patients. While PPV was excellent, standing for a low overtreatment rate using AUS for clinical decision making, sensitivity was poor overall, comparable to the results of other studies.
