The impact of liver resection on survival for locally advanced intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma tumors: A propensity score analysis
ConclusionHepatic resection was associated with a favorable impact on prognosis over chemotherapy for IC stage III and IVa of the 7th edition and for stage IIIb of 8th edition of AJCC staging system. Worse outcome has been observed in LR patients>65 years and with multifocal lesions. Randomized control studies are recommended to confirm the role of surgical resection in the management for advanced cases of IC, and to clarify the related prognostic factors. Ultrasound guided tattooing of axillary lymph nodes in breast cancer patients prior to neoadjuvant therapy, and identification of tattooed nodes at the time of surgery
ConclusionsTattooing of axillary LNs is safe and easily performed. Tattooing was helpful in identifying the marked LN in the majority of cases. This technique helps to ensure that metastatic LNs are identified and removed at surgery after NAT. (Source: European Journal of Surgical Oncology (EJSO))

Systemic adjuvant chemotherapy for cholangiocarcinoma surgery: A systematic review and meta-analysis
We report a systematic review and meta-analysis to delineate the effect of AT on overall survival.MethodsEligible studies were identified from MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane and PubMed. Studies comparing adjuvant chemotherapy or chemoradiotherapy after curative-intent surgery with curative surgery only for biliary tract cancer were included. Data pertaining to tumours of the gallbladder and bile ducts were included. The primary outcome assessed was overall survival. Random-effects meta-analysis was performed, as well as pooling of unadjusted Kaplan-Meier curve data.Results35 studies involving 42,917 patients were analysed. Ther...

Added value of para-aortic surgical staging compared to 18F-FDG PET/CT on the external beam radiation field for patients with locally advanced cervical cancer: An ONCO-GF study
ConclusionPara-aortic surgical staging contributes significantly to individualize the radiation treatment of patients with LACC, particularly for those with positive PLN at PET/CT. Indication of surgical staging deserves particular attention when the PET/CT suggests positive LN in the common iliac region. (Source: European Journal of Surgical Oncology (EJSO))

Neoadjuvant chemotherapy in patients with breast cancer: Does response in the breast predict axillary node response?
ConclusionRadiological and pathological response in the breast to NACT does not accurately predict axillary response. The axilla and the breast should be viewed and assessed as two separate entities for treatment plans. (Source: European Journal of Surgical Oncology (EJSO))

Should we invest in biological age predictors to treat colorectal cancer in the older adults?
Publication date: Available online 8 November 2019Source: European Journal of Surgical OncologyAuthor(s): Sara Hägg, Juulia JylhäväAbstractColorectal cancer (CRC) is a chronic disease of the old population with slow development progressing into clinical signs and symptoms. Biological aging is characterized by e.g. mitochondrial dysfunction and epigenetic alterations (e.g. methylation) - mechanisms that are also important in cancer development. For CRC, specific types of tumors are distinguishable by their methylation patterns and several detection methods using different epigenetic marks have been developed ...

Publication date: Available online 7 November 2019Source: European Journal of Surgical OncologyAuthor(s): Monica Ramello, Riccardo A. AudisioAbstractPatient's frailty, attitude, life expectancy, affect the decision-making process, impacting on the following four points:1.Disclosing the diagnosis.2.Discussing treatment options and prognosis.3.Tailoring treatment.4.Assisting patients along their recovery.Setting up an open, frank, transparent and informative discussion is the key step in addressing a patient-centered treatment plan. Our recommendations are summarized in the following pages. (Source: European Journal of Surgical Oncology (EJSO))

Preoperative risk score for prediction of long-term outcomes after hepatectomy for intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma: Report of a collaborative, international-based, external validation study
ConclusionIn this external validation cohort, the PRS had mild discrimination and poor calibration performance, similarly to the original publication. Nevertheless, its ability to identify different classes of risk is clinically useful, for a better tailoring of a therapeutic strategy. (Source: European Journal of Surgical Oncology (EJSO))

What women want: Fertility sparing surgery in Borderline ovarian tumours patients and pregnancy outcome
ConclusionsConservative surgical treatment seems to be a reasonable therapeutic option for women with BOTs who wish to preserve fertility. Our results suggest that the obstetric outcomes after FSS are promising. Maternal desire and the age of diagnosis are the most important factors affecting PR after surgery. Fertility counselling should be an integral part of the clinical management of women with BOT. (Source: European Journal of Surgical Oncology (EJSO))

Locally recurrent rectal cancer; long-term outcome of curative surgical and non-surgical treatment of 447 consecutive patients in a tertiary referral centre

First Eastern European experience of isolated limb infusion for in-transit metastatic melanoma confined to the limb: Is it still an effective treatment option in the modern era?
ConclusionThis first Eastern European report of ILI for melanoma ITMs shows results comparable to those from other parts of the world. In this era of effective targeted and immune therapies, ILI remains a useful treatment option, with a high overall response rate and durable responses in patients with melanoma ITMs confined to a limb.
