Implementation of robot-assisted lymphaticovenous anastomoses in a microsurgical unit
ConclusionsThe current technology can be readily incorporated into a microsurgical unit. We developed four key learning points from the implementation of robot-assisted LVA in our microsurgical unit.Level of evidence: Level IV, risk/prognostic study (Source: European Journal of Plastic Surgery)

Increasing multidrug resistance in leech borne infections. Should we adjust antibiotic treatment regime in plastic surgery? A systematic review
ConclusionsConcluding this work, the survey revealed a growing number of more resistant or partially multi-resistant bacterial strains against different commonly used antibiotics, most probably based on increasing resistance in the environment. Taking these data into account, we advise combining leech therapy with minimal dual antibiotic drug administration with ciprofloxacin and co-trimoxazol in the first place and leech gut sampling before inset for antibiotic drug resistance monitoring, and increased awareness during and after leech therapy.Level of Evidence: Not ratable (Source: European Journal of Plastic Surgery)

Three-dimensional scanning for breast plastic and reconstructive surgery: An updated review
AbstractBreast plastic and reconstructive surgery are widely performed worldwide. There are various tools available to improve surgical outcomes. Among them, three-dimensional (3D) scanning is of considerable value. 3D scanning consists of hardware and software with multiple working principles. This review summarizes the recent advances in the application of 3D scanning in breast plastic and reconstructive surgery, including measuring aesthetic parameters, formulating preoperative plans, and evaluating postoperative results. The development trend of 3D scanning is to integrate with portable devices, 3D printing, deep learn...

Evaluating the utility of CT angiographic reports for evaluation of deep inferior epigastric artery in preparation for DIEP  flap breast reconstruction surgery
ConclusionFor optimal flap selection, radiology reports should include up to four DIEP perforators>1.5-mm-thick below the umbilical level and at the subfascial plane. This is crucial for successful flap reconstruction and reducing complications related to unexpected aberrant anatomy during surgical flap dissection. Improving radiology report quality is vital to assist surgeons in selecting abdominally based flaps for breast reconstruction.Level of Evidence: Level IV, Risk - Prognostic Study. Management of breast cancer —related lymphedema using free medial sural artery perforator (MSAP) flap: a VLVT approach
We describe the use of the free medial sural artery perforator (MSAP) flap in the management of breast cancer-related  lymphedema (BCRL). Patients with BCRL undergoing free MSAP flaps from 2020 to 2021 were identified. Patient characteristics, postoperative outcome, and quality of life were evaluated. Three patients underwent free MSAP flap. Average age and BMI were 41 years and 32.5 kg/m2, respectively. The three flaps survived completely. No donor site lymphedema was observed. No cellulitis infections developed. The three patients had a noticeable improvement in the diameter of the limb and reported a high satisfactio...

Introducing the suborbital retaining ligament, subseptal, and retroseptal spaces: a novel technique for non-surgical correction of tear trough deformity
ConclusionsAdoption of this novel concepts may aid practitioners for precise placement of the fillers in specific anatomical spaces according to the type of deformity, providing optimal results while reducing complications.Level of evidence: Level IV, therapeutic study (Source: European Journal of Plastic Surgery)

The effect of pitavastatin in an ischemic skin flap model in rats
ConclusionsOur study shows a significant prophylactic effect of pitavastatin over distal ischemia damage on a rat flap model.  Therefore, said drug may be useful in planning large flaps. Despite this, new studies in humans are necessary.Level of evidence: Not ratable (Source: European Journal of Plastic Surgery)

Limitation of microdissected thinning in free anterolateral thigh flap for hand reconstruction
ConclusionEvery case has a perforator pattern after running through the fascia, which allows surgeons to choose the appropriate thinning method. Perforators that run parallel to the superficial fascia are not good candidates for thinning. Instead, the thinning process should be performed with more perpendicular perforators.Level of evidence: Level IV, therapeutic study (Source: European Journal of Plastic Surgery)

Integra ® and Matriderm® dermal substitute: could personal medical history and lesion characteristics influence corrective surgery adverse outcome?
ConclusionsOccurrence of complications during wound healing should be prevented and avoided in order to achieve the best result in corrective surgeries. The presence of chronic diseases is an influencing factor for the success of treatment, regardless of the type of dermal substitute used. Pathologies affecting the CNS turned out to be one of the most significant factors considered. Type and lesion sites could also take part in the failure of corrective surgery with dermal matrices and/or non-optimal scarring.Level of evidence: Level III, risk/prognostic. The effect of nasal skin thickness on the outcome of rhinoplasty
ConclusionsThis study showed that people with thicker nasal skin are less satisfied with the outcome of their nose surgery, and therefore, more care should be considered for such people during and after surgery. However, skin type and color have no effect on the outcome of rhinoplasty.Level of Evidence: Level III, Risk - Prognostic Study (Source: European Journal of Plastic Surgery)

Effects of benidipine and amlodipine on viability of right deep circumflex iliac artery perforator flap: an experimental rat-model of reconstructive surgery
ConclusionsPresent study showed that the benidipine reduced ischemic damage and necrosis and increased viability in DCIA perforator flap as much as amlodipine did, but not significantly. The benidipine was found to be at least as effective as amlodipine in terms of amelioration of blood flow and angiogenesis in perforator flaps. Underlying mechanisms dose-dependent relationship should be clearly demonstrated in further studies.  Level of evidence: Not ratable (Source: European Journal of Plastic Surgery)

Review of surgeon-performed point-of-care ultrasound imaging in plastic surgery
ConclusionsPlastic surgeon –operated USS appears to have clear benefits in a wide range of uses within the field. With such a broad scope, it is clear that the modern plastic surgeons would benefit from proficiency in its use as a part of their repertoire and that its use should be taught to current trainees.Level of Evidence:  Not ratable (Source: European Journal of Plastic Surgery)

Randomized controlled study using autologous fat grafts, hybrid filler, and fractional CO2 laser resurfacing in the treatment of elastosis: analysis of outcomes and satisfaction
ConclusionsElastosis remains a genetically based skin condition, which cannot be considered curable. Hybrid filler and adipose tissue transfer can be both considered valid options to improve skin elastosis both in terms of patient satisfaction and enhancement of skin quality.Level of evidence:Level II, Therapeutic  study2229 (Source: European Journal of Plastic Surgery)
