Alterations in functional connectivity in patients with non-specific chronic low back pain after motor control exercise: a randomized trial
CONCLUSIONS: These findings demonstrated that MCE had superior effects in relieving pain and pain-related disability, which might be associated with its modulation of rsFC between the cerebellum and areas involved in sensory-discriminative processing of noxious and somato-sensory stimuli, affection, and cognition.CLINICAL REHABILITATION IMPACT: This study provided preliminary evidence that MCE might alleviate NCLBP through its modulation of the function of brain areas related to chronic pain and postural control. Those results support MCE's clinical application and help physiotherapists to provide better multidisciplinary ...

Dynamic suprahyoid muscle ultrasound in assessing oropharyngeal dysphagia in neurological disorders
CONCLUSIONS: Dynamic M-mode US of the SHM provided added value in evaluating the severity of dysphagia and differentiating swallowing mechanics of dysphagia related to underlying neurological disorders.CLINICAL REHABILITATION IMPACT: Dynamic M-mode US of the SHM can serve as a supportive tool for rapid screening and repetitive follow-up of patients with dysphagia, which would contribute to dysphagia rehabilitation in patients with various neurological disorders.PMID:38332698 | DOI:10.23736/S1973-9087.24.08216-9 (Source: European Journal of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine)

System for Tracking and Evaluating Performance (Step-App ®): validation and clinical application of a mobile telemonitoring system in patients with knee and hip total arthroplasty. A prospective cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: Therefore, we might conclude that Step-App® could be considered as a validated mobile telemonitoring system for remote assessment that might have a role in telemonitoring personalized rehabilitation programs for knee and hip replacement patients.CLINICAL REHABILITATION IMPACT: Our findings might guide clinicians in remote monitoring of physical performance in patients with musculoskeletal conditions, providing new insight into tailored telerehabilitation programs.PMID:38298025 | DOI:10.23736/S1973-9087.24.08128-0 (Source: European Journal of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine)

Walking test outcomes in adults with genetic neuromuscular diseases: a systematic literature review of their measurement properties
CONCLUSIONS: Most walking outcomes were found to be valid and reliable in NMDs. However, in view of the growing number of clinical trials, further studies are needed to clarify additional measurement properties.PMID:38300152 | DOI:10.23736/S1973-9087.24.08095-X (Source: European Journal of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine)

Post-polio syndrome is not a dysimmune condition
CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that PPS is not a dysimmune disease.CLINICAL REHABILITATION IMPACT: Our results do not sustain immunotherapy for PPS. Our work suggest that PPS may be mostly linked to physiological age-related phenomena in a disabled neuromuscular condition. Thus, our results emphasize the role of prevention and elimination of aggravating factors to avoid late functional worsening, and the importance of rehabilitation programs that should be adapted to patients' specific conditions.PMID:38252127 | DOI:10.23736/S1973-9087.23.08158-3 (Source: European Journal of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine)

Relevance and use of health policy, health systems and health services research for strengthening rehabilitation in real-life settings: methodological considerations
Eur J Phys Rehabil Med. 2024 Jan 22. doi: 10.23736/S1973-9087.24.08386-2. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTResearch on health policy, systems, and services (HPSSR) has seen significant growth in recent decades and received increasing attention in the field of rehabilitation. This growth is driven by the imperative to effectively address real-life challenges in complex healthcare settings. A recent resolution on 'Strengthening rehabilitation in health systems' adopted by the World Health Assembly emphasizes the need to support societal health goals related to rehabilitation, particularly to promote high-quality rehabilitation ...

Simplified functioning assessment for low back pain: ICF-based item response theory modelling
CONCLUSIONS: The PCSI of LBP with 28 categories has good construct validity and internal consistency, and is a convenient instrument for assessing functioning among persons with LBP. The IRT model provided theoretical and algorithmic support for deriving a simplified model for functioning assessment hence serving a basis for formulating rehabilitation plans in clinical practice and research.CLINICAL REHABILITATION IMPACT: A parsimonious core set of ICF (PCSI) for LBP based on the IRT modelling provides a background for making individualized clinical decisions based on item difficulties.PMID:38214044 | PMC:PMC10792692 | DOI...

Outcomes in critically ill patients after diaphragmatic stimulation on ventilator-induced diaphragmatic dysfunction: a systematic review
CONCLUSIONS: Evidence of the molecular and histological benefits of diaphragmatic stimulation is limited. The results indicate positive clinical effects of diaphragm activation with a moderate level of evidence for MIP and a low level of evidence for other outcomes. Diaphragm activation could be a therapeutic solution to avoid diaphragm atrophy, accelerate weaning, shorten MV time, and counteract VIDD; however, better-powered studies are needed to increase the level of evidence.PMID:38214045 | PMC:PMC10794987 | DOI:10.23736/S1973-9087.23.08031-0 (Source: European Journal of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine)

Evidence-based position paper on physical and rehabilitation medicine professional practice for persons with COVID-19, including post COVID-19 condition: the European PRM position (UEMS PRM Section)
This study aimed to improve Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (PRM) physician's professional practice for persons with COVID-19-related functioning limitations, to promote functional recovery and reduce activity limitations and/or participation restrictions. A systematic review of the scientific literature was performed from December 2019 to August 2022, followed by production of recommendations through 5 Delphi rounds, by consensus among the delegates of all European countries represented in the Union of European Medical Specialists PRM Section. The systematic literature review is reported together with thirty-two reco...

Rehabilitation and COVID-19: systematic review by Cochrane Rehabilitation
CONCLUSIONS: Interventions that are part of comprehensive pulmonary rehabilitation approaches may benefit dyspnea and exercise tolerance in adults with COVID-19 and PCC. The available evidence has several methodological limitations that limit the certainty of evidence and the clinical relevance of findings. Therefore, we cannot provide robust suggestions for practice. While high-quality RCTs are being conducted, clinicians should consider using high-quality evidence from other pulmonary conditions to rehabilitate patients with COVID-19 or PCC using context-specific interventions.PMID:38214047 | PMC:PMC10792873 | DOI:10.237...

Which information derived from the Coma Recovery Scale-Revised provides the most reliable prediction of clinical diagnosis and recovery of consciousness?. A comparative study using machine learning techniques
CONCLUSIONS: Interestingly, the total score in the CRS-R and, especially, the total score in its subscales provided the best overall results, in contrast to the clinical diagnosis, which could indicate that a comprehensive measure of the clinical diagnosis rather than the condition of the individuals could provide a more reliable prediction of the neurobehavioral progress of individuals with prolonged DOC.CLINICAL REHABILITATION IMPACT: The results of this work have important implications in clinical practice, offering a more accurate prognosis of patients and thus giving the possibility to personalize and optimize the reh...
