Intraoral radiography lacks accuracy for the assessment of peri-implant bone level - a controlled clinical study.
CONCLUSIONS: Bone sounding without flap elevation was the best predictor of peri-implant bone level, whereas intraoral radiography was the most inferior. Consequently, peri-implantitis may be under-diagnosed if examination is only based on radiographs. Conflict-of-interest statement: Prof Hugo De Bruyn is associated with education and research collaboration agreements with Dentsply Sirona and Southern Implants, on behalf of Ghent University. Prof Cosyn has a collaboration agreement with Nobel Biocare. All other authors declare that they have no conflict of interest. PMID: 29234750 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Eur...

Influence of horizontal dimensions around single gap and adjacent zirconia implants on the papilla - a cross-sectional survey.
CONCLUSIONS: Horizontal interproximal dimensions around zirconia implants showed very weak influence on the papilla height. A high or a low contact point position of the crowns did not affect the papilla deficit. Conflict of Interest and sources of funding: All authors reported no conflict of interest. There were no sources of funding for the research. PMID: 29234751 [PubMed - in process] (Source: European Journal of Oral Implantology)

Morphological and immunophenotypical differences between chronic periodontitis and peri-implantitis - a cross-sectional study.
CONCLUSIONS: Despite the significantly more severe general inflammatory infiltrate and plasma cells in P-I cases, it proved difficult to detect reliable differential morphological features based on histopathological images of these CP and P-I soft-tissue samples, obtaining low inter-observer and intra-observer diagnostic agreement. Conflict of interest statement: This investigation was partially supported by Research Groups #CTS-138 and #CTS-583 (Junta de Andalucía, Spain). No conflict of interest. Single vs two implant-retained overdentures for edentulous mandibles: a systematic review.
CONCLUSION: Mandibular overdentures retained by a single implant have comparable results to those retained by two implants. However, this should be interpreted with caution as all the included studies were considered at a high risk of bias. Conflict of interest statement: None declared. Wide diameter immediate post-extractive implants vs delayed placement of normal-diameter implants in preserved sockets in the molar region: 1-year post-loading outcome of a randomised controlled trial.
CONCLUSIONS: Preliminary 1 year follow-up data suggest that immediate placement of 6.0 to 8.0 mm wide diameter implants in molar extraction sockets yielded inferior aesthetic outcomes than ridge preservation and delayed placement of conventional 4.0 to 5.0 mm diameter implants. Conflict of interest statement: This trial was partially funded by the manufacturer of the implants evaluated in this investigation (MegaGen Implant Co, Gyeongbuk, South Korea). However, data belonged to the authors and in no way did the manufacturer interfere with the conduct of the trial or the publication of its results. PMID: 28944355 [P...

Two or three machined vs roughened surface dental implants loaded immediately supporting total fixed prostheses: 1-year results from a randomised controlled trial.
CONCLUSIONS: These preliminary results suggest that immediately loaded cross-arch prostheses can be supported by only two mandibular or three maxillary dental implants at least up to 1 year post-loading, independently of the type of implant surface used. Longer follow-ups are needed to understand whether one of the two-implant surfaces is preferable. Conflict of interest statement: Sweden & Martina, the manufacturer of the implants used in this investigation, supported this trial, however data belonged to the authors and by no means did the sponsor interfere with the conduct of the trial or the publication of its resul...

Endodontic retreatment vs dental implants of teeth with an uncertain endodontic prognosis: 1-year results from a randomised controlled trial.
CONCLUSIONS: The preliminary results suggest that both endodontic retreatment and replacement of previously endodontically treated teeth with persisting pathology and a dubious endodontic prognosis provided similar short-term success rates. Aesthetics of the soft tissues and time needed to complete treatment were in favour of endodontic retreatment, whereas implant rehabilitation required half of the chair time than endodontic retreatment, but was significantly more expensive. Although much larger patient populations and longer follow-ups are needed to fully answer this question, in this scenario the less invasive endodont...

Ceramic vs composite veneering of full arch implant-supported zirconium frameworks: assessing patient preference and satisfaction. A crossover double-blind randomised controlled trial.
CONCLUSIONS: No difference between the two treatments was detected for preference, changes of OHIP-21, complications, reduction of FMPS, VAS changes regarding patient satisfaction, chewing and phonetics. Nevertheless, a slight difference was detected in the VAS regarding aesthetic acceptance favouring the ceramic material. FUNDING: The study was supported by Nobel Biocare (grant 2012-1077). Thanks to this contribution, the patients who consented to participate in this RCT were not charged for the material provided by Nobel Biocare. In addition, the patients benefited from a further back-up prosthesis that was provi...

Crestal sinus lift using an implant with an internal L-shaped channel: 1-year after loading results from a prospective cohort study.
CONCLUSIONS: Sinus floor augmentation can be successfully accomplished with a transcrestal approach using a dedicated implant system. A physiologic contraction of 11.3% of the original volume of the bone graft was experienced during the first 6 months of healing; afterwards, no additional graft volume reduction was observed. Long-term clinical studies are needed to confirm these preliminary results. Conflict of interest statement: Dr M Tallarico and Dr SM Meloni are consultants for Maxillent, who provided funding for this research project. Prof DL Cochran is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the same company. Ho...

Immediate loading of fixed prostheses in fully edentulous jaws - 1-year follow-up from a single-cohort retrospective study.
CONCLUSIONS: Immediately loaded cross-arch prostheses supported by four to five implants are a viable therapeutic option, if prostheses are made with resistant frameworks. Cone-beam computed tomography with ultra-low dose protocols for pre-implant radiographic assessment: An in vitro study.
CONCLUSIONS: Low-dose scanning protocols may be applied for pre-implant radiographic assessment, although image quality can be hampered if the radiation exposure is too low and the voxel size too large.
