Are all sugars equal? Role of the food source in physiological responses to sugars with an emphasis on fruit and fruit juice
AbstractHigh (free) sugar intakes can increase self-reported energy intake and are associated with unfavourable cardiometabolic health. However, sugar source may modulate the effects of sugars due to several mechanisms including the food matrix. The aim of this review was to assess the current state of evidence in relation to food source effects on the physiological responses to dietary sugars in humans relevant to cardiometabolic health. An additional aim was to review potential mechanisms by which food sources may influence such responses. Evidence from meta-analyses of controlled intervention trials was used to establis...

Optimal folic acid dosage in lowering homocysteine: Precision Folic Acid Trial to lower homocysteine (PFAT-Hcy)
ConclusionsThis randomized trial lent further support to the efficacy of FA in lowering tHcy; more importantly, it provided critically needed evidence to inform optimal FA dosage. We found that the efficacy of FA in lowering tHcy reaches a plateau if the daily dosage exceeds 1.2  mg, and only has a small gain by increasing the dosage from 0.8 to 1.2 mg.ClinicalTrials.gov IdentifierNCT03472508 (Registration Date: March 21, 2018). Contribution of plant-based dairy and fish alternatives to iodine nutrition in the Swiss diet: a Swiss Market Survey
ConclusionOnly four out of 477 plant-based alternative products are iodine fortified in the Swiss market. Thus, the risk for consumers to miss out on the ca. 25% of the RDA for iodine by consuming plant-based alternatives is high, placing them at a risk for inadequate iodine intake. Additive efficacy and safety of probiotics in the treatment of ulcerative colitis: a systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionProbiotic-assisted therapy may be effective in inhibiting UC recurrence in patients in clinical remission without increasing the risk of treatment-related adverse events; furthermore, probiotics may increase the rate of clinical remission in patients with active UC. However, caution is needed when interpreting the clinical efficacy of probiotics in improving the clinical outcome of patients with active UC. (Source: European Journal of Nutrition)

Meeting the global protein supply requirements of a growing and ageing population
AbstractHuman dietary patterns are a major cause of environmental transformation, with agriculture occupying  ~ 50% of global land space, while food production itself is responsible for ~ 30% of all greenhouse gas emissions and 70% of freshwater use. Furthermore, the global population is also growing, such that by 2050, it is estimated to exceed ~ 9 billion. While most of this expansion in popul ation is expected to occur in developing countries, in high-income countries there are also predicted changes in demographics, with major increases in the number of older people. There is a growing consensus that older p...

Diet quality in relation to kidney function and its potential interaction with genetic risk of kidney disease among Dutch post-myocardial infarction patients
ConclusionThe DHD-CVD index for overall adherence to Dutch dietary guidelines for CVD patients was not associated with kidney function decline after MI, irrespective of genetic CKD risk. The preferred dietary pattern for CKD prevention in CVD patients warrants further research. (Source: European Journal of Nutrition)

Discerning animal-sourced food in diet using isotope analysis of human scalp hair and fingernails
ConclusionsThe study helps to demarcate lacto-vegetarians from omnivores, and estimate the percentage of animal protein in diet based on the dual isotope values of human tissues. It also acts as a reference to determine isotopic composition of hair tissue provided the isotope value of nail tissue is known and vice versa. (Source: European Journal of Nutrition)
