Cardiovascular disease in transgender people: a systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Transgender people have a 40% higher risk of CVD compared with cisgender people of the same birth sex. This emphasizes the importance of cardiovascular risk management. Future studies should assess the potential influence of socio-economic and lifestyle factors.PMID:38302717 | DOI:10.1093/ejendo/lvad170 (Source: European Journal of Endocrinology)

Fructose intake from sugar-sweetened beverages is associated with a greater risk of hyperandrogenism in women: UK Biobank cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: The consumption of ≥10 g/day fructose from SSB, corresponding to ≥200 mL serving, is associated with a 2% higher risk of hyperandrogenism in women. These observational data are supported by our genetic data.PMID:38291515 | DOI:10.1093/ejendo/lvae006 (Source: European Journal of Endocrinology)

Evaluation of bone-related mechanical properties in female patients with long-term remission of Cushing's syndrome using quantitative computed tomography-based finite element analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Women with prior hypercortisolism have reduced trabecular vBMD and impaired bone geometrical and mechanical properties, which may contribute to an elevated fracture risk despite long-term remission.PMID:38285633 | DOI:10.1093/ejendo/lvae004 (Source: European Journal of Endocrinology)

Lack of NAD(P)+ transhydrogenase activity in patients with primary adrenal insufficiency due to NNT variants
CONCLUSIONS: The manifestation of PAI in NNT-mutated patients is associated with a complete lack of NNT activity. Evaluation of NNT activity can be useful to characterize disease-causing NNT variants.PMID:38261461 | DOI:10.1093/ejendo/lvae011 (Source: European Journal of Endocrinology)

Carney complex predisposes to breast cancer: prospective study of 50 women
CONCLUSIONS: As CNC could predispose to breast carcinoma, an adequate screening strategy and follow-up should be discussed in affected women.CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrial.gov NCT00668291.PMID:38252880 | DOI:10.1093/ejendo/lvae010 (Source: European Journal of Endocrinology)

Reference intervals for serum 11-oxygenated androgens in children
CONCLUSIONS: We developed and validated an assay for 11-oxygenated androgens, in addition to four classic androgens and established reference intervals. This enables a comprehensive evaluation of serum androgen status in children with clinical symptoms of hyperandrogenism.PMID:38243909 | DOI:10.1093/ejendo/lvae008 (Source: European Journal of Endocrinology)

Recovery of adrenal function after stopping mitotane in patients with adrenocortical carcinoma
CONCLUSIONS: Our study demonstrates that adrenal recovery occurs in most patients after stopping mitotane, particularly when followed up in specialized centers, but not in all. Elimination time of mitotane after treatment discontinuation is very long but individually quite variable.PMID:38244214 | DOI:10.1093/ejendo/lvae007 (Source: European Journal of Endocrinology)

Ciliopathy due to POC1A deficiency: clinical and metabolic features, and cellular modeling
CONCLUSIONS: Severe growth retardation, IGF-1 resistance, and centripetal fat repartition associated with insulin resistance-related metabolic abnormalities should be considered as typical features of SOFT syndrome caused by biallelic POC1A null variants. Adipocyte dysfunction and cellular senescence likely contribute to the metabolic consequences of POC1A deficiency. SOFT syndrome should be included within the group of monogenic ciliopathies with metabolic and adipose tissue involvement, which already encompasses Bardet-Biedl and Alström syndromes.PMID:38245004 | DOI:10.1093/ejendo/lvae009 (Source: European Journal of Endocrinology)

Extensive Expertise in Endocrinology: Adrenal crisis in assisted reproduction and pregnancy
Eur J Endocrinol. 2024 Jan 18:lvae005. doi: 10.1093/ejendo/lvae005. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAppropriate management of adrenal insufficiency in pregnancy is challenging due to the rarity of both primary, secondary and tertiary forms of the disease as well as the lack of evidence-based recommendations to guide clinicians to glucocorticoid and sometimes also mineralocorticoid dosage adjustments. Debut of adrenal insufficiency during pregnancy requires immediate diagnosis as it can lead to adrenal crisis, intrauterine growth restriction and foetal demise. Diagnosis is difficult due to overlap of symptoms of adrenal insuf...

Insulitis in human type 1 diabetes: lessons from an enigmatic lesion
Eur J Endocrinol. 2024 Jan 17;190(1):R1-9. doi: 10.1093/ejendo/lvae002. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTType 1 diabetes is caused by a deficiency of insulin secretion which has been considered traditionally as the outcome of a precipitous decline in the viability of β-cells in the islets of Langerhans, brought about by autoimmune-mediated attack. Consistent with this, various classes of lymphocyte, as well as cells of the innate immune system have been found in association with islets during disease progression. However, analysis of human pancreas from subjects with type 1 diabetes has revealed that insulitis is often less ...

Efficacy of cabergoline in non-irradiated patients with acromegaly: a multi-centre cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: In non-irradiated patients, cabergoline normalises IGF-1 in around one-third and achieves both IGF-1 and GH targets in approximately one out of ten cases. SRL+cabergoline is less efficient than previously reported possibly due to differences in studies methodology and impact of confounding factors.PMID:38231133 | DOI:10.1093/ejendo/lvae003 (Source: European Journal of Endocrinology)

Clinical features of anti-pituitary-specific transcription factor-1 (PIT-1) hypophysitis: a new aspect of paraneoplastic autoimmune condition
Eur J Endocrinol. 2024 Jan 3;190(1):K1-K7. doi: 10.1093/ejendo/lvad179.ABSTRACTThe pathogenesis of anti-pituitary-specific transcription factor-1 (PIT-1) hypophysitis was gradually revealed as cases emerged. Our comprehensive analysis, including all reported cases, identified a new instance of anti-PIT-1 hypophysitis postimmune checkpoint inhibitor therapy. All 9 patients exhibited extremely low growth hormone (GH), prolactin (PRL), and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels; 2 had a slightly atrophic pituitary gland; 4 had thymoma, and 5 had malignant neoplasms of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and other origins....

High prevalence of venous thrombotic events in Cushing's syndrome: data from ERCUSYN and details in relation to surgery
CONCLUSION: Patients with CS have an elevated risk of developing VTE for an extended period of time. From ERCUSYN cohort patients have higher risk for VTE if they need multiple surgeries to treat CS, are males and have high UFC values at the diagnosis of CS. Since there is no agreement on thromboprohpylaxis, a protocol for VTE prevention that is widely adopted appears to be necessary for patients with CS.PMID:38146835 | DOI:10.1093/ejendo/lvad176 (Source: European Journal of Endocrinology)
