Cold atmospheric plasma: a new tool for the treatment of superficial driveline infections [CASE REPORT]
We describe the first use of CAP to treat a superficial DI. CAP was applied with the kinPen® MED plasma jet device (neoplas tools GmbH, Greifswald, Germany), in the treatment of a DI in a 66-year-old VAD patient in Klinikum Karlsburg, Germany. The patient received a daily application of CAP of 1 min for 12 days. One CAP application was administered each week for 4 weeks in our outpatient clinic after patient discharge. Laboratory tests were conducted and photographs of the driveline exit site were taken. After CAP treatment, the local infection was completely regressed without any signs of exudation or recurrence of th...

Fungal native pulmonary valve endocarditis: facing both medical and surgical challenges [CASE REPORT]
We report herein a rare case of isolated pulmonary valve endocarditis caused by Candida albicans. The patient did not display prior heart disease. Medical management was unsuccessful. Pulmonary valve replacement allowed rapid improvement. (Source: European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery)

Right ventricular centripetal plication: an aggressive right ventricular exclusion technique [SURGICAL TECHNIQUE]
In patients with a functional single ventricle such as neonatal Ebstein's anomaly or pulmonary atresia with intact ventricular septum, the right ventricle can compress the left ventricle and decrease its performance due to the volume or pressure overload of the right ventricle. We have performed right ventricular centripetal plication from the inside to exclude the right ventricle and to minimize the adverse effect on the left ventricle and the results have been satisfactory. Significance of R1-resection at the bronchial margin after surgery for non-small-cell lung cancer [THORACIC]
CONCLUSIONS R1-BRM comprises a higher rate of stump recurrence, compared with that of R0-BRM. Herein, R1-EMD was associated with poor overall survival in Stage IB/II disease. In Stage IIIA disease, R1-BRM showed similar overall survival rate to that for R0-BRM, although the number of patients was too small to draw definitive conclusions thereon. The differential impact of preoperative comorbidity on perioperative outcomes following thoracoscopic and open lobectomies [THORACIC]
CONCLUSIONS The expected postoperative length of stay for a patient treated by OPEN lobectomy is approximately equal to that of a VATS lobectomy patient with an additional 2–3 comorbidities. The VATS approach remains advantageous with respect to PO-LOS, regardless of the number of comorbidities. (Source: European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery)

Pharyngo-oesophageal perforation following anterior cervical discectomy and fusion: management and results{dagger} [THORACIC]
CONCLUSIONS: Patients with minimal leaks in the absence of systemic infection can be managed conservatively. For cases of large fistulas with systemic infection, we recommend partial or total removal of the fixation devices, direct suture of the oesophageal defect and coverage with tissue flaps. Factors associated with survival in patients with oesophageal cancer who achieve pathological complete response after chemoradiotherapy: a nationwide population-based study [THORACIC]
CONCLUSIONS Patient age ≥55 years, upper third lesions and an LND number of <20 are adverse prognostic factors in OSCC patients who achieve pCR following CRT. High-risk patients should be strictly followed. (Source: European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery)

Pretreatment quality-of-life score is a better discriminator of oesophageal cancer survival than performance status [THORACIC]
CONCLUSIONS In patients with Stage II–III oesophageal cancer being considered for curative therapy, pretreatment FACT-E and ECS have better discrimination for survival than does ECOG. The majority of patients were ECOG 0/1. Thus, these patient-derived scores were able to discriminate survivors from non-survivors even within this constrained range of clinician-assigned performance status. This highlights the potential utility of FACT-E and ECS as prognostic tools. (Source: European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery)

Influence of history of cannabis smoking in selected donors on the outcomes of lung transplantation [TX & MCS]
CONCLUSIONS The history of donor cannabis smoking does not appear to affect early and mid-term outcomes after LTx and potentially improve the donor pool. As it does not seem to negatively affect the outcomes after LTx, it should not be per se considered a contraindication for lung donation. (Source: European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery)

Impact of mode of failure and end-organ dysfunction on the survival of adult Fontan patients undergoing cardiac transplantation [TX & MCS]
CONCLUSIONS Favourable cardiac transplantation outcomes can be achieved in adults with failing Fontan circulation. Patients with PVF may represent a distinct subset with more perturbed failing Fontan physiology and higher cardiac transplant mortality. We continue, however, to evolve and refine our strategies and are optimistic concerning future improvement in outcomes even in those with PVF. (Source: European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery)

Mid-term mechanical circulatory support: comparison of single-centre data with the EUROMACS registry [TX & MCS]
CONCLUSIONS MCS is a valuable therapeutic option with excellent survival rates; nevertheless, it is associated with clinically significant complication rates. International registries are important tools that allow, as an example, internal quality control of mortality, complication and morbidity rates from a single centre compared with the EUROMACS database. Zonal organ allocation system and its impact on long-term outcomes after lung transplantation: a propensity score matched analysis{dagger} [TX & MCS]
CONCLUSION: Despite excellent early outcomes the zonal allocation system might be associated with significantly poorer long-term outcomes in terms of freedom from BOS after bilateral LTx. Further research is needed to find the underlying factors leading to these results. (Source: European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery)
