Research Trends and Readership Growth: a Brief Review of the Journal ’s First Five Years
AbstractSince December 2018, theJournal for STEM Education Research had published five volumes from 2018 to 2022. In this  editorial, I take a retrospective look at these volumes, summarize the journal’s publication performance over its first five-year development, and share some insights with the broad international STEM education community. Different discrete motor-unit activation patterns in the flexor carpi radialis in boys and men
ConclusionCompared with men, boys tended to recruit their MUs earlier and at a lower percentage of MVIC. This difference in MU recruitment may explain the greater decrease in MUFR with increasing RT in boys compared with men. Overall, these findings suggest an age-related difference in the neural strategy used to develop moderate –high torque in wrist flexors, where boys recruit more of their MUs earlier in the force gradation process, possibly resulting in a narrower recruitment range. Uninterrupted prolonged sitting and arterial stiffness: moderating effect of prior aerobic exercise in physically active adults
ConclusionsWhile aerobic exercise resulted in a significant decrease in faPWV prior to sitting, the prior exercise bout did not confer a protective effect against the deleterious effects of uninterrupted sitting. Future work should investigate the combined effect of prior exercise and sitting interruption strategies on markers of arterial stiffness. (Source: European Journal of Applied Physiology)

Close relationships between neck and upper-back stiffness and transverse cervical artery flow velocity
ConclusionTCA hemodynamics correlated with muscle hardness when evaluating localized TM hardness. This relationship and low PSV in the TCA were evident in symptomatic subjects. These results suggest that PSV in the TCA is associated with neck and upper-back stiffness. (Source: European Journal of Applied Physiology)

How to activate the glutes best? Peak muscle activity of acceleration-specific pre-activation and traditional strength training exercises
ConclusionThe acceleration-specific exercises effectively activate the gluteal muscles for pre-activation and strength training purposes and might help improve horizontal acceleration  due to their direct coordinative transfer. (Source: European Journal of Applied Physiology)

Do soleus responses to transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation show similar changes to H-reflex in response to Achilles tendon vibration?
ConclusionWhile the sensitivity of TSCS seems to be similar to the gold standard H-reflex to highlight the vibratory paradox, both responses showed different sensitivity to the effects of prolonged vibration, suggesting slightly different pathways may actually contribute to evoked responses of both stimulation modalities. Reference values for estimated VO2max by two submaximal cycle tests: the Åstrand-test and the Ekblom-Bak test
ConclusionWe present reference values for estimated VO2max from two submaximal cycle tests. Age, exercise, and BMI influenced estimated VO2max. These references can be valuable  in clinical evaluations using the same submaximal tests. (Source: European Journal of Applied Physiology)

Impact of supra-maximal interval training vs. high-intensity interval training on cardiac auto-regulation response in physically active adults
ConclusionOur findings confirmed that SMIT is a more potent modulator of the autonomic nervous system compared with HIIT. Further study is needed to monitor through complete recovery to baseline, to understand acute cardiac auto-regulation response after cessation of various exercise intensities identical interval training protocol. Controllable multi-domain semantic artwork synthesis
We present a novel framework for the multi-domain synthesis of artworks from semantic layouts. One of the main limitations of this challenging task is the lack of publicly available segmentation datasets for art synthesis. To address this problem, we propose a dataset calledArtSem that contains 40,000 images of artwork from four different domains, with their corresponding semantic label maps. We first extracted semantic maps from landscape photography and used a conditional generative adversarial network (GAN)-based approach for generating high-quality artwork from semantic maps without requiring paired training data. Influence of 8-weeks of supervised static stretching or resistance training of pectoral major muscles on maximal strength, muscle thickness and range of motion
ConclusionStretching showed increases in maximal strength and hypertrophy, which were comparable with commonly used resistance training. Based on current literature, the influence of mechanical tension as the underlying mechanism is discussed. Furthermore, as equipment and comparatively long stretching durations are requested to induce meaningful strength increases in recreationally active participants, practical application seems limited to special circumstances. Energetics of sinusoidal exercise below and across critical power and the effects of fatigue
ConclusionThe lower aerobic component during CPex than CP-50ex associated with lactate accumulation explained lower\({\dot{V}}_{{{\text{O}}}_{2}}\) AMP in CPex. The asymmetries in CPex suggest progressive decline of muscle phosphocreatine concentration, leading to fatigue, as witnessed by RPE. (Source: European Journal of Applied Physiology)
