Potential Micronutrient Deficiencies in the First 1000 Days of Life: The Pediatrician on the Side of the Weakest
This study is to examine potential micronutrient deficiencies and any need for supplementation in children following specific diet plans in the first 1000 days of life.RECENT FINDINGS: Optimal nutrition in the first 1000 days of life has a lifelong positive impact on child development. Specific intrauterine and perinatal factors, pathological conditions, and dietary restrictions can represent potential risk factors for micronutrient deficiencies in the first 1000 days of life, which can have negative systemic consequences. Preterm and low-birth-weight infants are intrinsically at risk because of immature body systems. Chil...

A pediatrician's guide to epilepsy surgery
Curr Probl Pediatr Adolesc Health Care. 2024 Mar 13:101578. doi: 10.1016/j.cppeds.2024.101578. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSurgical intervention for epilepsy emerged in the second half of the 20th century as an important option for pediatric patients with medically refractory epilepsy. Both the number of patients undergoing epilepsy surgery and the available surgical procedures for epilepsy have expanded in the last 3 decades, and now range from surgical resection to neuromodulatory device placement1,2 Studies showing that many patients who would be excellent candidates for surgery are still not being offered appropriate...

Genetic testing for unexplained epilepsy: A review of diagnostic approach, benefits, and referral algorithm
Curr Probl Pediatr Adolesc Health Care. 2024 Mar 13:101579. doi: 10.1016/j.cppeds.2024.101579. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn the last several decades, advances in genetic testing have transformed the diagnostic and therapeutic approach to pediatric epilepsy. However, the interpretation of these genetic tests often requires expert analysis and counseling. For this reason, as our molecular understanding of the linkages between abnormal cerebral physiology and genetics has grown, so too has the field of clinical epilepsy genetics. Here we explore recent advances in genetic testing, describe the benefits of genetic testing ...

Increased Cyclic Adenosine Monophosphate Responsive Element is Closely Associated with the Pathogenesis of Drug-resistant Epilepsy
CONCLUSION: Our study shows that enhanced CREB expression promotes the development of DRE and negatively regulates GABAA receptor levels and that the inhibition of CREB expression may reduce the incidence of DRE.PMID:38468526 | DOI:10.2174/0115672026290996240307072539 (Source: Epilepsy Curr)

Accelerating therapeutic development and clinical trial readiness for STXBP1 and SYNGAP1 disorders
Curr Probl Pediatr Adolesc Health Care. 2024 Mar 11:101576. doi: 10.1016/j.cppeds.2024.101576. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTGene-targeted therapies for genetic neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) are becoming a reality. The Center for Epilepsy and Neurodevelopmental Disorders (ENDD) is currently focused on the development of therapeutics for STXBP1 and SYNGAP1 disorders. Here we review the known clinical features of these disorders, highlight the biological role of STXBP1 and SYNGAP1, and discuss our current understanding of pathogenic mechanisms and therapeutic development. Finally, we provide our perspective as scientis...
