Risk factors for anxiety in patients with epilepsy: A meta-analysis
CONCLUSION: This meta-analysis showed that female, unmarried, low socioeconomic status, education level below senior high school, a history of trauma, monotherapy, AED-induced psychiatric side effects, depression, a history of suicide, and shame were risk factors for anxiety in PWE. However, further research is needed to determine the effect of other potential risk factors on anxiety in PWE. In addition, most of the studies included in this meta-analysis were not uniform in scale, and the risk factors were not comprehensive; therefore, larger prospective studies in different countries are needed to further investigate thes...

Mental health and neurodevelopmental patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) for children and young people with epilepsy: A systematic review
Epilepsy Behav. 2024 Feb 17;153:109671. doi: 10.1016/j.yebeh.2024.109671. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTChildren and young people with epilepsy are at higher risk of mental health disorders and atypical neurodevelopmental outcomes compared to the general population. It is essential to detect such comorbidities early in children with epilepsy and provide appropriate interventions, to improve clinical outcomes. We aimed to identify and evaluate the measurement properties of Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) that have been validated specifically to measure mental health and neurodevelopmental outcomes in children and/...

Prevalence and factors associated with psychosis among adults with epilepsy at a tertiary hospital in Uganda, cross-sectional study
CONCLUSION: Psychosis affects nearly 7% of adults with epilepsy in Uganda especially among those who are older, with perceived stigma and substance use. Routine screening and early intervention to management of psychosis in PWE is highly recommended.PMID:38368789 | DOI:10.1016/j.yebeh.2024.109691 (Source: Epilepsy and Behaviour)

Caregiver burden and its predictors in adult epilepsy patients
CONCLUSION: It was found that two-thirds of the families of patients with epilepsy experienced varying degrees of caregiver burden. In addition, it was determined that caregiver burden was associated with sociodemographic and numerous psychosocial factors of the patient as well as the caregiver. It is important that both the caregiver and the patient being cared for are closely evaluated in interventions to reduce the caregiver burden in patients with epilepsy.PMID:38368790 | DOI:10.1016/j.yebeh.2024.109685 (Source: Epilepsy and Behaviour)

Neuropsychological outcome after frontal surgery for pediatric-onset epilepsy with focal cortical dysplasia in adolescent and young adult
CONCLUSION: Postoperative changes in cognitive function varied depending on the location and side of the resection. For precise presurgical prediction of neuropsychological outcome after surgery, further prospective studies are needed to accumulate data of cognitive changes in relation to the resection site.PMID:38368791 | DOI:10.1016/j.yebeh.2024.109687 (Source: Epilepsy and Behaviour)

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder in adults with epilepsy: An indirect relationship with suicide risk
CONCLUSIONS: ADHD was diagnosed in 12.1% of adults with epilepsy and was not associated with any epilepsy-related factors. ADHD was indirectly associated with the risk of suicide resulting from depression and anxiety in adults with epilepsy.PMID:38368792 | DOI:10.1016/j.yebeh.2024.109672 (Source: Epilepsy and Behaviour)

Post-traumatic seizures and factors associated among adult patients with depressed skull fractures at Mulago National Referral hospital; cross-sectional study
CONCLUSION: Patients with moderate and severe traumatic brain injury and midline brain shift were associated with post traumatic seizures. Early identification and intervention may reduce the burden of posttraumatic seizures in this category of patients.PMID:38368722 | DOI:10.1016/j.yebeh.2024.109693 (Source: Epilepsy and Behaviour)
