Effect of duration of sodium valproate therapy on bone mineral density and vitamin D levels
CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest a significant negative impact of prolonged sodium valproate use on both bone density and Vitamin D levels in pediatric patients. These results underscore the importance of monitoring and managing bone health in children receiving long-term sodium valproate therapy.PMID:38447300 | DOI:10.1016/j.yebeh.2024.109733 (Source: Epilepsy and Behaviour)

Characteristics and outcomes of youth with functional seizures attending intensive interdisciplinary pain treatment
This study examined clinical characteristics and outcomes of youth with FS (13-23 years) presenting to a pediatric intensive interdisciplinary pain treatment (IIPT) program in the midwestern United States. Sixty youth (mean age = 16.5 years; 83.3 % female) met inclusion criteria. At intake, comorbid chronic pain, somatic symptoms, autonomic dysfunction, eating and weight disturbances, and mental health concerns were common. Despite this high symptom burden, youth with FS reported significant improvements in functioning measured with the Functional Disability Inventory, t(53) = 9.80, p <.001, d = 1.32; depression measure...

Pregnancy, antiseizure medications and unexplained intrauterine foetal death
CONCLUSIONS: Although it is possible that prenatal ASM exposure may increase the risk of IUFD, other non-pharmacological factors are more relevant to the occurrence to IUFD in pregnant WWE.PMID:38442517 | DOI:10.1016/j.yebeh.2024.109724 (Source: Epilepsy and Behaviour)

Patient experiences of resection versus responsive neurostimulation for drug-resistant epilepsy
This study explored illness experiences and decision-making among patients with epilepsy who underwent two different types of surgical interventions: resection versus implantation of the NeuroPace Responsive Neurostimulation System (RNS). We recruited 31 participants from a level four epilepsy center in an academic medical institution. We observed 22 patient clinic visits (resection: n = 10, RNS: n = 12) and conducted 18 in-depth patient interviews (resection: n = seven, RNS: n = 11); most visits and interviews included patient caregivers. Using an applied ethnographic approach, we identified three major themes in the expe...

The role of stand-alone videos in the diagnosis of seizures
Epilepsy Behav. 2024 Mar 1;153:109673. doi: 10.1016/j.yebeh.2024.109673. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe diagnosis of seizures and seizure mimics relies primarily on the history, but history has well-known limitations. Video recordings of events are a powerful extension of the history because they allow neurologists to view the events in question. In addition, they are readily available in situation, whereas the gold standard of EEG-video is not. That includes underserved or rural areas, and events that are too infrequent to be captured during a few days of EEG-video monitoring. Brief cellphone videos have been shown to ...

Tuberous sclerosis complex in adulthood: focus on epilepsy prognosis
CONCLUSIONS: In our cohort of adult patients with TSC, epilepsy remains one of the main neurological challenges with only 5.3% of cases manifesting in adulthood. Approximately 64% of these patients failed to achieve seizure remission. ID and multiple seizure types were the main predictors of poor outcome. Nephrological manifestations require continuous specific follow-up in adults.PMID:38428171 | DOI:10.1016/j.yebeh.2024.109688 (Source: Epilepsy and Behaviour)

Socioeconomic status in adulthood of children with and without a history of seizures: A retrospective cohort study
CONCLUSION: Cognitive problems in childhood (using educational attainment and scores on primary school tests proxy markers for cognition) rather than a history of seizures per se, were associated with lower SES in a population of adults born 1950-56 in Aberdeen. This relationship may be different depending on the time in history and nation/region of study. Given the changes in health, education and social support in the management of children with seizures over time, it would be of interest to investigate outcomes in a contemporary cohort. Such studies should ideally have validated diagnoses of seizures, details on seizure...

Epilepsy and education: A case-control analysis of the impact of an intensive epilepsy training program on undergraduate medical students
CONCLUSION: Our study showed that a 6-week intensive education program in epilepsy increased the knowledge and practical skills and changed the attitude toward patients with epilepsy of undergraduate students.PMID:38428173 | DOI:10.1016/j.yebeh.2024.109717 (Source: Epilepsy and Behaviour)

Long-term memory consolidation of new words in children with self-limited epilepsy with centro-temporal spikes
Epilepsy Behav. 2024 Feb 29;153:109720. doi: 10.1016/j.yebeh.2024.109720. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAccelerated long-term forgetting has been studied and demonstrated in adults with epilepsy. In contrast, the question of long-term consolidation (delays > 1 day) in children with epilepsy shows conflicting results. However, childhood is a period of life in which the encoding and long-term storage of new words is essential for the development of knowledge and learning. The aim of this study was therefore to investigate long-term memory consolidation skills in children with self-limited epilepsy with centro-temporal spi...
