CBD treatment following early life seizures alters orbitofrontal-striatal signaling during adulthood
Epilepsy Behav. 2024 Feb 6;152:109638. doi: 10.1016/j.yebeh.2024.109638. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTObsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is a comorbid condition of epilepsy and often adds to the burden of epilepsy. Both OCD and epilepsy are disorders of hyperexcitable circuits. Fronto-striatal circuit dysfunction is implicated in OCD. Prior work in our laboratory has shown that in rat pups following a series of flurothyl-induced early life seizures (ELS) exhibit frontal-lobe dysfunction along with alterations in electrographic temporal coordination between the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) and dorsomedial striatum (DMS), ci...

Quality of life in people with epilepsy: The associations of anti-seizure medications and biopsychosocial variables
This study examined the associations between specific anti-seizure medications, biopsychosocial factors, and QOL in people with epilepsy. Analysis of covariance revealed that individuals taking three or more anti-seizure medications had significantly lower QOL than those taking levetiracetam. Findings also demonstrated that when examining biopsychosocial factors as predictors of QOL in hierarchical regression, anxiety, depression, and daytime sleepiness were significant predictors of QOL. Once these factors were entered into the model, number of medications was no longer significant. The final model predicted 59.6% of the ...

How do children with focal epilepsies perceive the moment they realize that they are about to have a seizure? A pilot study
CONCLUSION: Children who perceive in advance that they are about to have a seizure are well able to describe their experience. Most children take measures to manage their seizures. Those measures were regarded as helpful by most children with other focal epilepsies, but by no child with SELECTs. Larger studies are necessary to determine the factors contributing to the child's perception as well as the nature of the support that they require.PMID:38306740 | DOI:10.1016/j.yebeh.2024.109663 (Source: Epilepsy and Behaviour)

Elevated phase amplitude coupling as a depression biomarker in epilepsy
Epilepsy Behav. 2024 Jan 31;152:109659. doi: 10.1016/j.yebeh.2024.109659. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDepression is prevalent in epilepsy patients and their intracranial brain activity recordings can be used to determine the types of brain activity that are associated with comorbid depression. We performed case-control comparison of spectral power and phase amplitude coupling (PAC) in 34 invasively monitored drug resistant epilepsy patients' brain recordings. The values of spectral power and PAC for one-minute segments out of every hour in a patient's study were correlated with pre-operative assessment of depressive symp...

Association between cognitive impairment and antiseizure medication adherence among people with epilepsy in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
CONCLUSIONS: There is a high rate of cognitive impairment and non-adherence to ASMs in PWE living in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Poor ASM adherence is a possible risk factor for cognitive impairment. PWE can benefit from interventions to improve ASM adherence, physical exercise, and better educational attainment.PMID:38295505 | DOI:10.1016/j.yebeh.2024.109651 (Source: Epilepsy and Behaviour)

Structural and functional changes associated with functional/dissociative seizures: A review of the literature
CONCLUSION: The contribution of neuroimaging may allow a more precise explanation of the disorder for patients, avoiding the stigma frequently associated with this diagnosis. as with other 'conversion' phenomena which have traditionally been considered only as 'medically unexplained'. In the longer term and beyond a better understanding of the physiopathology of the disorder, the challenge of this neuroimaging work would be to identify specific imaging biomarkers for a diagnosis of FDS.PMID:38281393 | DOI:10.1016/j.yebeh.2024.109654 (Source: Epilepsy and Behaviour)

Historical roots of the stigma of epilepsy: A review of the classic Iranian literature
CONCLUSIONS: Classic Persian literature considered epilepsy as a simile for suffering and a sign of insanity that is caused by blasphemous beliefs or celestial objects, with PWE classified as insane and unwise. While such depictions became less prevalent after the 14th century CE, they can give rise to misconceptions and negative stigma toward PWE and should be addressed in modern culture. Each society should critically investigate its socio-cultural origins of stigma and rectify such misbeliefs.PMID:38280255 | DOI:10.1016/j.yebeh.2024.109644 (Source: Epilepsy and Behaviour)

Dual diagnosis of epilepsy and dissociative seizures: Prescription patterns, feasibility and safety of rationalising antiseizure medication
CONCLUSIONS: Clinicians should consider the development of co-morbid DS in patients with epilepsy not responding to an escalation of ASM, especially if presenting with a new seizure type. Patients with a dual-diagnosis of epilepsy and DS, particularly those with well controlled epilepsy, are likely overtreated with ASM. Medication review in a tertiary epilepsy centre allows for safe rationalisation of ASM and likely contributes to the need for fewer hospital attendances.PMID:38277845 | DOI:10.1016/j.yebeh.2024.109661 (Source: Epilepsy and Behaviour)
