Vitamin D Supplement Use and Risk of Breast Cancer by Race-Ethnicity
Conclusions: Our findings are consistent with the hypothesis that recent vitamin D use is inversely associated with breast cancer risk. (Source: Epidemiology)

Explaining the Variance in Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors: A Comparison of Demographic, Socioeconomic, and Genetic Predictors
Conclusions: Focusing on genetic inputs into personalized medicine predictive models, without considering measures of social context that have clear predictive value, needlessly ignores relevant information that is more feasible and affordable to collect on patients in clinical settings. Short-term Exposure to Air Pollution and Attributable Risk of Kidney Diseases: A Nationwide Time-series Study
Conclusion: This study provides quantitative estimates of ER burdens attributable to air pollution. Results are consistent with the hypothesis that stricter air quality standards benefit kidney patients. (Source: Epidemiology)

Critical Time Windows for Air Pollution Exposure and Birth Weight in a Multicity Canadian Pregnancy Cohort
Discussion: We used a novel, flexible selection method to identify critical windows when maternal exposures to air pollution were associated with decrements in birth weight. Our results suggest that air pollution impacts on fetal development may not be adequately captured by trimester-based analyses. (Source: Epidemiology)

Recent Changes in the Patterns of Breast Cancer as a Proportion of All Deaths According to Race and Ethnicity
Conclusions: Breast cancer mortality disparities are now greater on both relative and absolute scales for non-Hispanic Black women, and using the relative scale for Asian/Pacific Islander and Hispanic women, compared with non-Hispanic White women for the first time in 50 years. Spatial Errors in Automated Geocoding of Incident Locations in Australian Suicide Mortality Data
Conclusion: Suicide incidents that occur at nonresidential addresses are being erroneously geocoded to centralized fall-back locations in autogeocoding processes, which can lead to misidentification of suicide clusters. Our findings provide insights toward defining the nature of the problem and refining geocoding processes, so that suicide data can be used reliably for the detection of suicide hotspots. Poverty, Deprivation, and Mortality Risk Among Women With HIV in the United States
Background: Prior studies suggest neighborhood poverty and deprivation are associated with adverse health outcomes including death, but evidence is limited among persons with HIV, particularly women. We estimated changes in mortality risk from improvement in three measures of area-level socioeconomic context among participants of the Women’s Interagency HIV Study. Methods: Starting in October 2013, we linked geocoded residential census block groups to the 2015 Area Deprivation Index (ADI) and two 2012–2016 American Community Survey poverty variables, categorized into national tertiles. We used parametric g-c...

Prescription Opioid Laws and Opioid Dispensing in US Counties: Identifying Salient Law Provisions With Machine Learning
Conclusions: Our systematic analysis of 162 law provisions identified patient data access and several pain management clinic provisions as predictive of county prescription opioid dispensing patterns. Future research employing other types of study designs is needed to test these provisions’ causal relationships with inappropriate dispensing and to examine potential interactions between PDMP access and pain management clinic provisions. Validation of a Claims-based Algorithm to Identify Pregestational Diabetes Among Pregnant Women in the United States
Conclusions: The claims-based algorithm for pregestational diabetes and type 2 diabetes performed well; however, the PPV was low for type 1 diabetes. (Source: Epidemiology)

Detecting Heterogeneity of Intervention Effects Using Analysis and Meta-analysis of Differences in Variance Between Trial Arms
Conclusions: Using meta-analysis, we overcame low power of individual trials to examine differences in variance using meta-analysis. Evidence of differences in variance should be followed up to identify potential effect modifiers and explore other possible causes such as varying compliance. (Source: Epidemiology)
