Bioremediation and Bioscavenging for elimination of Organophosphorus threats: An approach using enzymatic advancements
Environ Res. 2024 Apr 8:118888. doi: 10.1016/j.envres.2024.118888. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOrganophosphorus compounds (OP) are highly toxic pesticides and nerve agents widely used in agriculture and chemical warfare. The extensive use of these chemicals has severe environmental implications, such as contamination of soil, water bodies, and food chains, thus endangering ecosystems and biodiversity. Plants absorb pesticide residues, which then enter the food chain and accumulate in the body fat of both humans and animals. Numerous human cases of OP poisoning have been linked to both acute and long-term exposure to thes...

Electrochemical Microplastic Detection using Chitosan-Magnesium Oxide Nanosheet
Environ Res. 2024 Apr 8:118894. doi: 10.1016/j.envres.2024.118894. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMicroplastics, an invisible threat, are emerging as serious pollutants that continuously affect health by interrupting/contaminating the human cycle, mainly involving food, water, and air. Such serious scenarios raised the demand for developing efficient sensing systems to detect them at an early stage efficiently and selectively. In this direction, the proposed research reports an electrochemical hexamethylenetetramine (HMT) sensing utilizing a sensing platform fabricated using chitosan-magnesium oxide nanosheets (CHIT-MgO NS)...

Identification of hot spots and co-occurrence patterns of activities on thyroid hormone receptor and transthyretin binding in passive samplers from Czech surface waters
Environ Res. 2024 Apr 8:118891. doi: 10.1016/j.envres.2024.118891. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOne of the less studied in vitro biological activities in the aquatic environment are thyroid hormone receptor beta (TRβ)-mediated agonistic and antagonistic activities and transthyretin (TTR) binding activity. They were measured mostly using active sampling methods, but rarely found. It is unclear if these activities co-occur, and the drivers of the (anti-)TRβ activity are mostly unknown. Therefore, the main aim of the study was to determine (anti-)TRβ activities as well as transthyretin (TTR) binding activity in passive sa...

Multiple exposure pathways and health risk assessment of PAHs in Lanzhou city, a semi-arid region in northwest China
In this study, we analyzed the characteristics and sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) pollution in PM2.5, water, diet, and dust during different periods in Lanzhou, and estimated corresponding carcinogenic health risk through inhalation, ingestion, and dermal absorption. Our observations revealed the concentrations of PAHs in PM2.5, food, soil, and water are 200.11 ng m-3, 8.67 mg kg-1, 3.91 mg kg-1, and 14.5 ng L-1, respectively, indicating that the Lanzhou area was seriously polluted. Lifetime incremental cancer risk (ILCR) showed a heightened cancer risk to men compared to women, to the younger than the ...

Source apportionment of soil PTE in a northern industrial county using PMF model: Partitioning strategies and uncertainty analysis
In this study, a representative industrial-agricultural hub in North China (Xuanhua district, Zhangjiakou City) was selected as the research subject, multiple partition processing (PP) strategies and uncertainty analyses were integrated to advance the PMF modeling and associated algorithm mechanisms were comparatively discussed. Specifically, we adopted three methods to split the research area into several subzones according to industrial density (PP-1), population density (PP-2), and the ecological risk index (PP-3) respectively, to rectify the spatial bias phenomenon of PTE concentrations and to achieve a more interpreta...

Recovery strategies and mechanisms of anammox reaction following inhibition by environmental factors: A review
Environ Res. 2024 Apr 6:118824. doi: 10.1016/j.envres.2024.118824. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAnaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) is a promising biological method for treating nitrogen-rich, low-carbon wastewater. However, the application of anammox technology in actual engineering is easily limited by environmental factors. Considerable progress has been made in recent years in the anammox restoration strategies. The latest progress has significantly helped address the issue of poor reaction performance following the inhibition of anammox. This review systematically outlines the strategies employed to recover anammo...

This study investigates the distribution of rare earth elements (REEs) within the Beijing water system, specifically examining the Yongding, Chaobai, Beiyun, Jiyun, and Daqing rivers. Results indicate that the Beiyun River exhibits the highest REE concentrations, ranging from 35.95 to 59.78 μg/mL, while the Daqing River shows the lowest concentrations, ranging from 15.79 to 17.48 μg/mL. LREEs (La to Nd) predominate with a total concentration of 23.501 μg/mL, leading to a notable LREE/HREE ratio of 7.901. Positive Ce anomalies (0.70-1.11) and strong positive Eu anomalies (1.38-2.49) were observed. The study suggests that...
