Golgi protein 73 versus serum α-fetoprotein as tumor markers for hepatocellular carcinoma in patients with hepatitis C cirrhosis
Conclusion Serum GP-73 level at cut-off value of 16.25 ng/ml can be used as a diagnostic marker for HCC in patients with chronic HCV. However, it is not superior to AFP as both of them had the same sensitivity, but AFP showed higher specificity. Combination of both increases the sensitivity. (Source: Egyptian Liver Journal)

Predictive value of hepcidin in patients with chronic hepatitis C infection among Egyptians
This study included 80 (54 patients and 26 controls) individual who were matched in age and sex. Serum hepcidin levels and serum iron status were determined. Their levels were correlated with each other and with other laboratory parameters. Results Mean serum hepcidin levels were significantly lower in patients with CHC than in controls (P=0.001). Patients with CHC had significantly higher mean values of serum iron and ferritin than controls (P=0.001 and 0.017, respectively). There was a significant negative correlation between hepcidin levels and alanine aminotransferase, (r=−0.454, P (Source: Egyptian Liver Journal)

Drug development challenges in liver disease clinical trials
Drug development process faces many challenges, including those encountered in clinical trials for liver diseases. Drug development is a lengthy and highly costly process. Only 10% of compounds entering first study in humans (phase 1) make it to the market after an average of 14 years with a cost of ~$3 billion. Interestingly, according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid services, prescription drugs constituted only 10% of each healthcare dollar spent in the USA in 2015. Examples of challenges encountered in liver clinical trials include lack of validated patient-reported outcome tools, blinding issues, and the use o...

Assessment of health-related quality of life after hepatocellular carcinoma management (radiofrequency ablation or transarterial chemoembolization): a pilot Egyptian study
This study aimed to assess the effect of HCC and different locoregional HCC therapy [radiofrequency ablation (RFA) or transarterial chemoembolization (TACE)] on the HRQoL. Patients and methods Eighty HCC patients with CLD, 58 (72.5%) men and 22 (27.5%) women, mean age 51.8±6.2 years, were categorized into two groups. Group I included 40 HCC patients treated with RFA and group II included 40 HCC patients treated with TACE. The control Group included 40 CLD patients without HCC.
