Significance of Moraxella catarrhalis as a causative organism of lower respiratory tract infections
Conclusion This study shows that when microbiological and clinical criteria are met, M. catarrhalis when isolated should be considered as a pathogen causing lower respiratory tract infections. Prevalence of concealed and overt chronic renal failure in patients with COPD
Conclusion CRF either concealed or overt may be associated with COPD patients and should be screened, not only by serum creatinine level but also by the estimated GFR to recognize the cases of concealed CRF who have low GFR despite normal serum creatinine level. Occurrence of sleep related breathing disorders in Egyptian patients with tachyarrhythmia without heart failure
Conclusions OSAHS is highly prevalent in patients with tachyarrhythmia. High triglyceride, NC and BMI are the most predictors of presence of OSAHS. AF is the most common form of the arrhythmia in patients with OSAHS. Clinical implications OSAHS should be considered as part of the workup of patients with tachyarrhythmia. Both clinical apnea score and STOP BANG are good screening questionnaire to choose patients who need sleep study. (Source: Egyptian Journal of Chest Diseases and Tuberculosis)

Pigeon fancier ’s lung – An under-diagnosed cause of severely debilitating and chronic breathlessness
We report a case of 53year old female who presented with severe chronic breathlessness due to regular exposure to pigeons for last 35years. Clinicians should take a detailed history of exposure in patients with unexplained breathlessness as the avoidance of exposure to the antigens can reverse the disease preventing the morbidity and mortality of the patient. Ultrasound guided closed pleural biopsy versus medical thoracoscopic pleural biopsy in diagnosis of pleural diseases
Conclusion Both TUS guided pleural biopsy and medical thoracoscopic pleural biopsy are available to diagnose different pleural lesions each of which has its advantages and disadvantages. The proper selection of the patients for each modality will result in raising the diagnostic yield of both modalities. TUS examination before medical thoracoscopy will allow proper selection of patients, reduce incidence of complications, guide for the best site of entry and raisethe diagnostic yield of medical thoracoscopy. Comparative study between the use of image guided pleural biopsy using Abram ’s needle and medical thoracoscope in diagnosis of exudative pleural effusion
Conclusion If US guidance can be used for biopsies performed with an Abrams needle, the yield of this traditional method can be increased. However, in case of small single lesions located in inaccessible sites to an Abrams needle, or when diagnosis and therapy are both indicated, thoracoscopy is preferred. The use of US-guided Abram’s needle pleural biopsy is simple, safe and well tolerated. (Source: Egyptian Journal of Chest Diseases and Tuberculosis)

Endurance and strength training in pulmonary rehabilitation for COPD patients
Conclusion PR is an effective intervention for the post-exacerbation management of COPD patients. It leads to significant improvements of dyspnea, HRQL and functional exercise capacity. When added to a program of ET, strength training confers additional benefits in muscle force, but not in overall exercise capacity or health status. Study of pigtail catheter and chest tube in management of secondary spontaneous pneumothorax
Conclusion Pigtail catheter drainage is nearly effective as ICT drainage of first episode of SSP. Pigtail catheter offers a safe, tolerable method for draining SSP with a shorter duration of drainage and hospital stay more than ICT. Increasing BMI is associated with drainage failure of SSP, where obesity is considered as a risk factor with high specificity for pigtail catheter drainage failure. Impact of VAP bundle adherence among ventilated critically ill patients and its effectiveness in adult ICU
Conclusion The application of VAP bundle is a feasible reality that produces improvement in microbiological measures and nosocomal infection rates resulting in lowering mortality, shortened lengths of hospitalization and decreased medical care costs. However, education and periodic training remain a fundamental process of improving health services. VAPs were reduced by improving bundle compliance and ensuring the same standard of care to all ICU patients. Direct, on-site observation was a more accurate method of monitoring. Pre and post operative diagnosis of lung cancer patients: Is there a concordance?
Conclusion Our study shows pre and postoperative discrepancy in nearly 30% of cases. This finding should be taken into account because it can change the therapeutic management of these patients in particular of non-operated patients. (Source: Egyptian Journal of Chest Diseases and Tuberculosis)

Evaluation of treatment failure outcome and its predictors among pulmonary tuberculosis patients in Sharkia Governorate, 2013 –2014
Conclusion This study showed that the treatment failure rate in our locality is relatively high. Positive sputum smear at 2months of TB treatment, radiological findings and retreatment patients were found to be predictors of TB treatment failure that should be recognized early and closely followed up. Serum resistin as an asthma marker and predictor of inhaled corticosteroid response in bronchial asthma in children
Conclusions From these results we can conclude that resistin can be considered as a marker of asthma and its severity and high resistin levels can predict favourable anti-inflammatory effect of inhaled glucocorticoids suggesting that resistin may be a marker of steroid-sensitive genotype in asthma in children.
