Early markers of renal damage in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) patients with or without diabetes mellitus
Conclusion Renal impairment is common in OSAS patients but more frequent if associated with diabetes mellitus. RDW% can be used as simple screening test for early detection of renal injury in OSAS patients with or without diabetes mellitus. (Source: Egyptian Journal of Chest Diseases and Tuberculosis)

Study of plasma orexin-A level in COPD patients during acute exacerbation
Conclusion Patients with COPD during acute exacerbation had higher values of plasma orexin-A when compared with normal subjects and plasma orexin-A correlated positively with BMI and BFP in these patients. (Source: Egyptian Journal of Chest Diseases and Tuberculosis)

The refined ABCD assessment and non-costly laboratory parameters are outcome predictors in acute exacerbation of COPD
Conclusions Elevated NLR can be used as a marker similar to ESR, in the determination of increased inflammation in acutely exacerbated COPD.A prognostic role was recognized for the ABCD GOLD categories. So when we faced by a patient with AECOPD, putting the clinical evaluation, including his gold category, side by side to the simple laboratory data will give good idea about the likely prognosis. Primary lung cancer in Assiut University Hospitals: Pattern of presentation within four years (January 2011: December 2014)
Conclusions Knowing that the incidence of lung cancer increased globally in both male and female, the relatively lower male to female ratio when compared with other studies, may reflect at least an increasing in the lung cancer rates among female. Smoking still remains the major risk factor in pathogenesis of primary lung cancer. COPD could be considered an important respiratory disorder that tied to bronchogenic carcinoma risk. Interestingly, the incidence of adenocarcinoma surpassed that of squamous cell carcinoma. Unfortunately, presentation of the patient at later stages of illness was common. Assessment of radiological pulmonary shadows in patients with extra pulmonary neoplasm
Conclusion Patients presented with advanced stages of primary extrapulmonary malignancy, current or former smokers, with multiple pulmonary nodules or mass in computed tomography of the chest, were more liable for being malignant and needs diagnostic biopsies. Spirometry using facemask versus conventional tube in patients with neuromuscular disorders
Conclusion The use of facemask during assessment of spirometric and respiratory pressures measures in patients with NMD and more specifically in patients with bulbar palsy is promising and can be considered a good alternative to conventional tube assessment for functional screening rationale. Effect of chest tube position on the success rate of pleurodesis: A retrospective cohort study
Conclusions In malignant pleural effusion, the success rates of pleurodesis may be similar regardless of the position of the tube. However, this is a retrospective study with insufficient participants. Hence, further investigation is required. (Source: Egyptian Journal of Chest Diseases and Tuberculosis)

Sputum bacteriology and antibiotic sensitivity pattern in COPD exacerbation in India
Conclusion With continuously changing bacterial flora of AECOPD, choice of antibiotic should be based on the local bacterial resistance pattern. Periodic studies to identify probable agents and their antibiotic sensitivity pattern would assist in formulating a cost effective antibiotic strategy reducing the emergence of drug resistance. Impact of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease severity on diaphragm muscle thickness
Conclusion The static TD measured at RV and at TLC are preserved in COPD. The TF bilaterally was significantly decreased in COPD group and is decreased with increasing severity of COPD. The negative correlation of TF and PaCO2 indicates that the diaphragm dysfunction is the main contributor to neuromuscular respiratory failure in COPD patients. Serum S100B: A possible biomarker for severity of obstructive sleep apnea
Conclusion Serum S100B protein was significantly elevated in OSA patients and its serum levels correlated with the severity of the disease. Increased serum S100B could indicat brain injury and could be a potential serum biomarker for detection of early neurological complications in OSA patients that could improve the management and care of these patients.
