Spatial Variation in the Inflammatory Response of House Sparrows in their Native Range
AbstractCharacterizing spatial differences in wildlife immunity is the first step to identify environmental drivers of host defense and disease risks. The house sparrow (Passer domesticus) is a model system for ecoimmunology, but spatial differences in immunity have been largely restricted to the invasive range of this global species. We provide an initial test of spatial variation in immune response to phytohemagglutinin in the native range, finding that birds from Romania have greater inflammatory responses than birds from Egypt. Future broad surveys across the house sparrow native range could contextualize these differe...

Low Level of Concern Among European Society About Zoonotic Diseases
AbstractZoonotic emerging diseases (ZEDs) are increasing and may deeply impact human wellbeing, but our recent survey of public opinion in six European countries (n = 2415 participants) suggests a low concern among Europeans about the risk associated with ZEDs. This contrasts with Europeans’ high awareness of climate change risks, which was confirmed by our survey. Given the increasing risk of ZEDs, it is therefore essential to increase Europeans’ awar eness of their impacts. In addition, our study suggests that Europeans may be more likely to support sustainable environmental policies that would reduce the risk as...

Marine Protected Area Expansion and Country-Level Age-Standardized Adult Mortality
AbstractMany countries have adopted targets to increase marine protected areas (MPAs) to limit the degradation of water bodies. Although there is evidence that MPAs can conserve marine life and promote biodiversity, there are limited data on the human health implications of MPAs. Using panel data from 1990, 2000, and 2014, we estimated the country-level associations between MPAs (i.e., percentage of territorial waters designated as marine reserves) and age-standardized mortality (i.e., age-standardized probability of dying between 15 and 60  years from all-causes among ages 15–60/100,000 population) by sex, among 110 co...

Salmonella enterica Infection of Synanthropic Non-native Geckos in Southern Florida
AbstractWild geckos are a significant source of human salmonellosis. We swabbed the cloacas of 37 non-native synanthropic geckos (Gekko gecko, n = 16;Phelsuma grandis,n = 21) from southern Florida, USA, and assayed swab DNA extracts using quantitative polymerase chain reaction of theinvA gene.Salmonella enterica was detected in both species with a pooled prevalence of 13.5% (5/37; 95% CI 5.3 –27.1%), indicating the potential for zoonotic transmission. Implications for human health in the region are discussed. (Source: EcoHealth)

The Impact of Drought on HIV Care in Rural South Africa: An Interrupted Time Series Analysis
AbstractThis analysis investigates the relationship between drought and antiretroviral treatment (ART) adherence and retention in HIV care in the Hlabisa sub-district, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Data on drought and ART adherence and retention were collated for the study period 2010 –2019. Drought was quantified using the 3-month Standard Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) and Standard Precipitation Index (SPI) from station data. Adherence, proxied by the Medication Possession Ratio (MPR), and retention data were obtained from the public ART programme database. MPR and retention were calculated from individua...
