Knowledge, attitudes and practices of cervical cancer screening among female students enrolled in higher education institutions in Cabo Verde
CONCLUSION: Most undergraduate female students enrolled in HEI in Cabo Verde have poor knowledge and unfavourable attitudes toward CC. The level of knowledge is quite unsatisfactory. Within this context, the implementation of health policies focused on human papillomavirus education, prevention strategies, and CC screening is crucial.PMID:38566763 | PMC:PMC10984840 | DOI:10.3332/ecancer.2024.1689 (Source: Ecancermedicalscience)

Variants in < em > BRCA1/2 < /em > in a hospital-based cohort in Chile and national literature review
CONCLUSION: Our findings advocate for the integration of NGS multi-gene panel testing as a primary strategy within our population. This approach allows for the comprehensive assessment of single nucleotide variants and CNVs in BRCA1/2, alongside other high and moderately penetrant genes associated with breast and ovarian cancer.PMID:38566764 | PMC:PMC10984842 | DOI:10.3332/ecancer.2024.1683 (Source: Ecancermedicalscience)

Epidemiological insights into colorectal cancer in northwestern Algeria
CONCLUSION: This study may provide a comprehensive glimpse into CRC epidemiology in northwest Algeria. Understanding regional differences is the key to implementing specific preventive and interventional strategies.PMID:38566765 | PMC:PMC10984843 | DOI:10.3332/ecancer.2024.1684 (Source: Ecancermedicalscience)

Digital roots: harnessing digital platforms in advancing traditional and complementary medicine for cancer care in Sub-Saharan Africa
Ecancermedicalscience. 2024 Mar 14;18:ed132. doi: 10.3332/ecancer.2024.ed132. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTThe rise in cancer rates in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), combined with limited access to Western pharmaceuticals, has sparked growing adoption of traditional and complementary medicine (T&CM) for cancer treatment in the region. However, many challenges exist, including the lack of reliable evidence-based research on these products, scarcity of standardized documentation as part of cancer registries, limited physician expertise, and negative effects on mortality. Nonetheless, herbal medicines also present opportunities fo...

Chest wall perforator flap partial breast reconstruction: a retrospective analysis of surgical, cosmetic and survival outcome
CONCLUSION: BCS with CWPF is an excellent option for reconstruction in small to medium-sized breasts. It is associated with minimal morbidity and comparable patient-reported cosmetic and survival outcomes.PMID:38566767 | PMC:PMC10984835 | DOI:10.3332/ecancer.2024.1681 (Source: Ecancermedicalscience)

Cancer patterns in Arua district, Uganda: a hospital-based retrospective study
CONCLUSION: There is a high incidence of liver cancer in Arua district. The high levels of cervical, breast and oesophagus cancer were consistent with what is reported by the two PBCRs in Uganda. However, BL could be due to the presence of a BL treatment centre at Kuluva hospital in Arua. Cancer interventions in Arua should therefore be targeted towards liver, cervix, breast, and oesophagus cancer and furthering research on the reason for the high incidence of liver cancer.PMID:38566768 | PMC:PMC10984836 | DOI:10.3332/ecancer.2024.1688 (Source: Ecancermedicalscience)

Clinicopathologic characteristics and treatment outcomes of pancreatic cancer patients at a tertiary referral hospital in Kenya
This study aimed to describe the clinical and pathologic characteristics, management, and outcomes of patients diagnosed with PC at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), a tertiary referral hospital in Kenya. Records of 242 patients diagnosed with PC at KNH between 1st January 2014 and 30th September 2021 were assessed in this retrospective cohort study. Data on their clinical, histopathologic, and treatment characteristics was presented as mean (± standard deviation) and/or median (interquartile range) for continuous variables and frequency (percentage) for categorical variables. Kaplan-Meier and Cox proportional hazard rati...

Gastric cancer in Sub-Saharan Africa - a systematic review of primary data
CONCLUSION: This systemic review demonstrates that GC incidence is highly variable across SSA. The limited data on GC treatment, mortality, and survival presents a significant challenge to providing a complete epidemiologic description of the burden of GC in SSA. There is a need for further robust data collection, exploration, and research studies on cancer care in SSA, with continued assessment of primary data availability.PMID:38566758 | PMC:PMC10984845 | DOI:10.3332/ecancer.2024.1680 (Source: Ecancermedicalscience)

Epidemiological and clinical description of patients with oropharyngeal cancer treated in a public oncology referral hospital in Chile
CONCLUSION: The epidemiological profile of patients with OPSCC treated in a Chilean public oncology referral centre reflects the epidemiological transition observed in developed countries. This change justifies the need to adapt health policies and conduct research that considers the characteristics of this new epidemiological profile.PMID:38566759 | PMC:PMC10984838 | DOI:10.3332/ecancer.2024.1685 (Source: Ecancermedicalscience)

Colorectal cancer disease profile and treatment patterns at an urban tertiary hospital in Rwanda
CONCLUSION: CRC patients presented at an advanced stage and required complex treatment regimens at KFH. Further epidemiologic and molecular research is needed to characterise CRC incidence and presentation at a national level in Rwanda as increasing westernisation continues to change the face of CRC in urban areas of SSA.PMID:38566760 | PMC:PMC10984839 | DOI:10.3332/ecancer.2024.1687 (Source: Ecancermedicalscience)
