The relationship between non-purging compensatory behaviors, clinical severity, and treatment outcomes in adults with binge-spectrum eating disorders
Eat Disord. 2024 Jan 7:1-11. doi: 10.1080/10640266.2023.2293504. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNon-purging compensatory behaviors (NPCB; e.g. driven exercise, fasting, other extreme behaviors) are a subcategory of compensatory behaviors typically characterized as infrequent and less severe. Limited prior research has studied NPCB despite their increasing prevalence among adults with binge-spectrum eating disorders (B-ED). More research is needed to understand the types of NPCB present among B-ED and the association between NPCB, clinical severity, and treatment outcomes. Secondary analyses were conducted among 155 adults w...

Family-based treatment (FBT) for loss of control (LOC) eating in youth: Current knowledge and future directions
This study is a secondary data analysis from a randomized controlled clinical trial (NCT00879151) testing FBT for 12-18-year-olds with BN. Data were reanalyzed to examine outcomes for LOC eating episodes, regardless of episode size. Abstinence rates, defined as zero LOC eating episodes (objective or subjective binge episodes) in the previous month, were calculated at the end-of-treatment (EOT), 6-month, and 12-month follow-up time points. Among 51 adolescent participants (M + SD: 15.94 + 1.53 y; 92% female; 23.5% Hispanic; 76.5% Caucasian), FBT significantly reduced LOC eating episodes, with 49% achieving LOC eating abstin...

The role of sexual assault history and PTSD in responses to food intake among women with bulimic-spectrum eating disorders
Eat Disord. 2023 Dec 13:1-17. doi: 10.1080/10640266.2023.2293597. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSexual abuse or assault (SA) history is associated with eating disorder severity and psychiatric comorbidity, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Beyond persistent alterations in mood and cognitions characterizing PTSD, PTSD due to SA may contribute to greater increases in negative affect and body image concerns following food intake in bulimic syndromes (BN-S). To test this, participants (n = 172) with BN-S who reported PTSD due to SA, PTSD due to other forms of trauma, or neither completed clinical interviews and ...

Eating behaviours and personality characteristics of clinicians and researchers working in eating disorders
This study examined whether these constructs differed amongst 83 EDCR and 47 general mental health clinicians/researchers (MHCR), who completed an online survey, measuring eating disorder symptomology, orthorexia nervosa, perfectionism, cognitive flexibility, and obsessive-compulsive traits. Significantly less dietary restraint, eating concerns and orthorexia nervosa behaviours, but significantly poorer ability to seek out alternative solutions (i.e. a component of cognitive flexibility) were found in the EDCR group compared with the MHCR group. Moderation analysis found no effect of ED history on the relationship between ...
