Validation of Korean Olfactory Questionnaire for Perioperative Olfactory Assessment in Endoscopic Endonasal Skull Base Surgery
Conclusion: The olfactory questionnaire correlated well with conventional psychosomatic olfactory function tests. In combination with clinical parameters and preoperative psychosomatic olfactory function tests, the olfactory questionnaire is suitable for assessing subjective olfactory function after endoscopic endonasal skull base surgery.PMID:38424695 | DOI:10.1177/01455613241234818 (Source: Ear, Nose and Throat Journal)

Giant Parotid Abscess With Significant Skin Necrosis: A Case Report
Ear Nose Throat J. 2024 Mar 1:1455613241231120. doi: 10.1177/01455613241231120. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPoor blood glucose control is a common predisposing factor for parotid abscesses; however, extensive skin necrosis secondary to parotid abscesses has rarely been reported. In this article, we present the case of a 70-year-old man with poor glycemic control admitted to our hospital with swelling, congestion, and pain in the right parotid region that had gradually increased over 15 days prior to presentation. Based on the clinical, imaging, and laboratory findings, the patient was diagnosed with a giant parotid absce...

A Comparative Study of Hearing Handicap Inventory and Pure-Tone Audiometry Scores in Unilateral Hearing Impaired Patients
Conclusion: The HHI and PTA results were consistent in the assessment of hearing status, particularly in the assessment of severe hearing loss, and the level of consistency between the 2 methods was high. The combined use of these tools can facilitate a comprehensive assessment of the auditory status of patients with hearing loss.PMID:38426445 | DOI:10.1177/01455613241235501 (Source: Ear, Nose and Throat Journal)

Myxoid Liposarcoma of the Parotid Gland
Ear Nose Throat J. 2024 Feb 29:1455613241235499. doi: 10.1177/01455613241235499. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLiposarcoma is extremely rare in the parotid gland. In this article, we report the case of an 87-year-old man who presented to our department with swelling in the left parotid region. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a tumor in the superficial lobe of the parotid gland. Total parotidectomy and ipsilateral lymph node dissection were performed. Histologic examination confirmed the diagnosis of myxoid liposarcoma of the parotid gland. On imaging, there was no evidence of nodal or distant metastasis. Radiatio...

The Impact of Hypoglossal Nerve Stimulation on Secondary Health Outcomes
Conclusions: Our results reinforce previous findings that HGNS is an effective treatment option for carefully selected patients with OSA. In addition, our findings suggest that HGNS may improve patients' quality of life while minimizing OSA associated morbidity.PMID:38424691 | DOI:10.1177/01455613241235538 (Source: Ear, Nose and Throat Journal)

Ossicular Reconstruction With Various Degrees of Malleus Preservation in Patients With Chronic Otitis Media
Conclusions: Our results indicate that complex cases compromised by adhesions, cholesteatoma, and cholesterol granuloma have worse outcomes regarding hearing improvement and success rates, while those with intact stapes suprastructure have better outcomes. Malleus was maximally preserved in the patients of this study; however, this showed no significant prognostic benefit in hearing.PMID:38411122 | DOI:10.1177/01455613241230843 (Source: Ear, Nose and Throat Journal)

Pediatric Pterygopalatine Fossa Schwannoma Presenting as Vision Loss: A Case Report and Literature Review
In this report, we present the unique case of a 6-year-old child exhibiting a sizable soft tissue mass in the left PPF, extending into the inferior orbital fissure. The patient underwent successful intranasal endoscopic removal of PPF schwannoma utilizing the prelacrimal recess approach, with postoperative pathology confirming the diagnosis of schwannoma. Schwannomas within the PPF are particularly uncommon, and instances of such tumors in pediatric patients are even more exceptional. This case highlights the diagnostic and therapeutic challenges associated with PPF schwannomas in children, emphasizing the significance of ...
