Oropharyngeal Stenosis Caused by Significant Scar Hyperplasia Following Tonsillectomy: A Case Report
Ear Nose Throat J. 2024 Feb 15:1455613241233750. doi: 10.1177/01455613241233750. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOropharyngeal stenosis (OPS) is a relatively rare long-term complication of tonsillectomy in children, resulting from the narrowing of the upper aerodigestive tract between the soft palate, pharyngeal sidewalls, and base of the tongue. This is the first reported case of OPS due to significant scar hyperplasia; however, whether it is as prone to recurrence as skin scar hypertrophy remains unknown. In this article, we present the case of a 5-year-old girl who presented to our otolaryngology clinic with sleep snoring...

IL-17 expression and prognosis of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma
Conclusion: High IL-17 expression in AN tissues could indicate poor prognosis and may be a prognostic marker for LSCC. Low CD8 expression in AN tissues may represent poor frontline antitumor immunity and be associated with poor prognosis.PMID:38357743 | DOI:10.1177/01455613241232500 (Source: Ear, Nose and Throat Journal)

Surgical Training Using Augmented Reality-Based Optical Head-Mounted Displays: A Pilot Study
In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of a holographic AR-based surgical training in tonsillectomy. Two otolaryngologists, 1 trainee and 1 instructor, performed 5 tonsillectomies using an AR headset (HoloLens 2, Microsoft, USA). The trainee wore the AR headset to share the surgical view through front camera while the instructor remotely accessed the device using the Microsoft Teams program and provided real-time guidance. The AR-based surgical training offered several advantages, including direct real-time guidance for the trainee and clear instructions without disturbing the surgical process. However, there were a...

Nasal Lobular Capillary Hemangioma During Pregnancy: A Systematic Review
Conclusion: Our review shows that nasal LCH during pregnancy usually manifests in the third trimester. This lesion can be treated by surgical excision with a relatively low risk of recurrence.PMID:38345001 | DOI:10.1177/01455613241230218 (Source: Ear, Nose and Throat Journal)

Effects of Marital Status on Hypopharynx Squamous Cell Carcinoma Survival Stratified by Demographic and Pathological Factors: A Retrospective Study
Conclusion: While there are survival benefits for married patients with hypopharynx SCC, married/partnered males may benefit more than females. Age, race, and gender could affect the correlation between marital status and survival.PMID:38345004 | DOI:10.1177/01455613241228079 (Source: Ear, Nose and Throat Journal)

The Trajectory of Oral Mucositis in Head and Neck Cancer Patients Undergoing Radiotherapy and its Influencing Factors
CONCLUSIONS: OM occurs in almost all patients with HNC who undergo radiotherapy. Changes in the severity of OM are a dynamic process, with the severity increasing with the cumulative radiotherapy dose. Specialist oral evaluation and oral care are needed to alleviate the severity of OM in HNC patients.PMID:38334289 | DOI:10.1177/01455613241228211 (Source: Ear, Nose and Throat Journal)

Sudden Secondary Sensorineural Hearing Loss Following Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease in an Adult Patient: A Case Report
Ear Nose Throat J. 2024 Feb 8:1455613241229960. doi: 10.1177/01455613241229960. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIntroduction: Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) can present as sudden hearing loss within 72 hours. Studies have shown that viral infection, including direct invasion, indirect reactions, stress responses, and immune-mediated hearing loss, is the main cause of SSNHL. Viral infection may play an important role in SSNHL by causing injury to the inner ear through blood or cerebrospinal fluid. In this article, we describe an adult case of SSNHL following hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD). Case Report: A 34-y...

Incidence of Neoplasm in Patients Referred for Epistaxis
Conclusions: Epistaxis is a common cause for referral to otolaryngology. Although the incidence of neoplasm in our patient population was low, nasal mass lesions warranting further workup were identified in 36 patients. Findings of neoplasm were more common in patients of Asian ethnicity, which may reflect the increased prevalence of nasopharyngeal carcinoma in this population. Otolaryngologic evaluation and nasal endoscopy should be considered in all cases of epistaxis.PMID:38321652 | DOI:10.1177/01455613231223946 (Source: Ear, Nose and Throat Journal)

Intraoperative Handheld Digital X-ray for Assessment of Intracochlear Positioning of Electrode Arrays in Recipients of Cochlear Implants
Conclusions: The use of intraoperative handheld digital X-ray using MINE ALNUĀ® proves to be a safe, efficient, straightforward, and reliable method for immediate identification of an inserted electrode array. It has potential to replace the traditional C-arm X-ray for verifying electrode positioning in the operating room.PMID:38321704 | DOI:10.1177/01455613231223954 (Source: Ear, Nose and Throat Journal)
