Testing the biosocial cognitive model of substance use in cannabis users referred to treatment
Cannabis is the most commonly used illicit drug worldwide (Hall, 2015). The global number of cannabis users is estimated at approximately 125 – 203 million people, or 2.8% - 4.5% of the global population (Degenhardt and Hall, 2012). Of those who ever try cannabis, it is estimated that 10% will become daily users and 20 – 30% will become weekly users (Hall and Pacula, 2003). Engaging in frequent and persistent cannabis use is associate d with increased risk for adverse outcomes including cannabis dependence (Hall and Degenhardt, 2009), long-term cognitive impairments (Solowij et al., 2002) and psychosis (van Os et al., ...

Use of the Fagerstr öm Test to assess differences in the degree of nicotine dependence in smokers from five ethnic groups: The HELIUS study
The prevalence of smoking varies greatly across countries. Western European countries, such as the Netherlands, have intermediate prevalence (Ng et al., 2014) while the estimated prevalence of daily smoking in men is relatively low in African countries. At a global level, women smoke consistently less than men (Ng et al., 2014). Similar differences across ethnic populations are observed within immigrant populations in high income countries. For example, one study performed in three immigrant populations in the Netherlands showed that the prevalence of smoking is higher in Turkish and Surinamese origin men (63% and 55%, res...

Comparison of age of first drink and age of first intoxication as predictors of substance use and mental health problems in adulthood
The age of first alcohol drinking (AFD) has traditionally been regarded as an important metric when considering alcohol-related harm in populations (Grant and Dawson, 1997; Schuckit and Russell, 1983). Delaying AFD has been put forward as a public health strategy both to help reduce the harms from alcohol exposure in adolescence and to lower the incidence of later alcohol use disorder (AUD) (Donaldson, 2009; Health and Council, 2009; U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Surgeon General, 2007). Conditional probabilities of substance use disorders and associated risk factors: Progression from first use to use disorder on alcohol, cannabis, stimulants, sedatives and opioids
Substance use is common around the world, but not everyone who uses will go on to develop a substance use disorder (SUD; i.e., DSM-IV criteria for abuse and/or dependence on alcohol or other drugs). Of the 250 million adults estimated to have used drugs at least once, in 2015, approximately 11.8% experienced a SUD (UNoDC, 2017). Findings from epidemiological research report considerable variability within and between substances in relation to the proportion of people who have used a substance that develop a SUD (i.e., conditional prevalence) and the speed of transition from use to use disorder. Effect of menstrual cycle on ethanol drinking in rhesus monkeys
Excessive alcohol drinking and alcohol use disorder (AUD) persist as major public health problems, resulting in ~80,000 deaths and costing>$223 billion per year in the US alone (Kanny et al. 2013). The development of effective medications requires an understanding of the how characteristics of individual patients affects their response to medication. For example, sex differences in the effects of alcohol are well-documented (see Becker and Koob 2016); understanding how both alcohol and putative medications differentially affect men and women will permit development of sex-specific pharmacotherapies. Longitudinal patterns of amphetamine use from adolescence to adulthood: A latent class analysis of a 20-year prospective study of Australians
After cannabis, amphetamines are some of the most widely used illicit substances globally. In recent years, their use and associated harms have risen in some countries including Australia, China, Indonesia and Myanmar (Degenhardt et al., 2016; Lai et al., 2016; UNODC, 2013). Regular use of amphetamines, especially by injection or smoking, is strongly associated with psychoses, depression, intentional self-harm and suicide attempts (Darke et al., 2008; Marshall and Werb, 2010; Park and Haning, 2016). The relationship between smoking cessation and binge drinking, depression, and anxiety symptoms among smokers with serious mental illness
The prevalence of smoking among those with mental health disorders is two to three times higher than that of the general US population, depending on clinical diagnosis (Gfroerer et al., 2013). Those with diagnoses consistent with serious mental illness (SMI) like major depressive disorder (Crum et al., 2013; Grant and Harford, 1995) and schizophrenia (Drake and Mueser, 2002) are also more likely to engage in alcohol abuse behaviors. Furthermore, evidence suggests that there is a high prevalence of concurrent smoking and alcohol dependence; nicotine-dependent smokers have nearly 3-times higher risk of becoming alcohol depen...

Laws limiting the prescribing or dispensing of opioids for acute pain in the United States: A National Systematic Legal Review
Overdose is a continuing public health crisis. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 64,000 Americans died from drug overdose in 2016 – nearly 175 every day. (Hedegaard et al., 2017) Drug overdose deaths – the majority of which are caused by opioids, either alone or in combination with other substances – now kill more Americans than did HIV/AIDS at the peak of that epidemic. A randomized controlled trial and economic evaluation of the Parents under Pressure Program for parents in substance abuse treatment
An increasing body of research suggests that adverse outcomes for children raised in families with parental substance-misuse emerge early in the child ’s life and are related to the quality of the parent-child relationship that significantly impacts on the child’s developing neurological (Schore, 2010) and attachment (De Wolff and van Ijzendoorn, 1997) systems (see Hatzis et al., 2017 for a review). Importantly, the quality of the caregiving r elationship is itself impacted by numerous chronic and inter-related problems that include co-occurring psychiatric disorders (Suchman et al., 2005), particularly disorders of af...

Interventions to address substance use and sexual risk among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men who use methamphetamine: A systematic review
Across global settings, including North America, Europe, East and South-East Asia, and Australia (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, 2017), methamphetamine (MA) use manifests within many gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men ’s (gbMSM) sexual and social lives (Ciketic et al., 2012). A growing body of research also indicates that the use of MA, used alone or in combination with other substances, is among the primary contemporary drivers of high-risk sexual behavior among gbMSM (e.g., unprotected anal intercourse with m ultiple concurrent partners), significantly contributing to the elevated rates of HIV...

Alcohol consumption and S-Klotho plasma levels in sedentary healthy middle-aged adults: A cross sectional study
Ageing is characterized by a progressive loss of physiological integrity, leading to impaired function and increased vulnerability to death (L ópez-otín et al., 2013). This deterioration is the primary risk factor for major human pathologies including cardiovascular diseases, osteoporosis, cancer and/or neurodegenerative disorders (López-otín et al., 2013). These diseases represent the major cause of morbidity and mortality in develope d countries, and implies a substantial increase in health costs (Kingsley, 2015; Wilmoth, 2000). Hepatitis C Virus genotype diversity and distribution among methadone maintenance treatment patients in Jiangsu, China
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is the pathogen of Hepatitis C which causes chronic liver disease, cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, and liver-related mortality worldwide. Globally, the prevalence of viraemic HCV was estimated to be 1 –1.1% which meant 71.1–80 million by 2015 (2017b). In mainland China, the anti-HCV prevalence rate was 0.43–1.6% in the general population (Bennett et al., 2015; Cui and Jia, 2013), and the number would be much higher in high-risk groups, such as paid blood donors, patients on hemodialysis and heroin users. Greater tolerance to losses in sensation seeking: Evidence from probability and delay discounting
The personality trait of sensation seeking is defined as “the tendency to take risks for varied, novel, complex and intense sensations and experiences” (Zuckerman, 1994). It has been in recent years regarded as a potential endophenotype of various risk-taking behaviors (Benjamin et al., 2001; Gottesman and Gould, 2003; Mann et al., 2017), including ri sky driving (Jonah, 1997), physical risk sports (Ruedl et al., 2012), promiscuous sexual activity (Hoyle et al., 2000), aggressive and unsocialized behaviors (Wilson and Scarpa, 2011), excessive gambling (Harris et al., 2015), and especially substance use (Bardo et al., 2...

Application of Vested Interest Theory to prevention of non-medical prescription stimulant and marijuana use: Unforeseen benefits of attitude-behavior inconsistency
Attitude, an “evaluative integration of cognitions and affects experienced in relation to an object” (Crano and Prislin, 2006), was viewed by Allport (1954) as the “primary building stone in the edifice of social psychology.” Attitudes have played a central role in explaining and predicting a range of hu man actions (Bohner and Dickel, 2011; Crano and Prislin, 2006), but they are not infallible predictors of behavior (Crano, 1995; McGuire, 1985; Siegel et al., 2014). The current research acknowledges, and seeks to take advantage of this lack of perfect association between attitudes and behaviors. (Source: Drug and Alcohol Dependence)

Influence of comorbid drug use disorder on receipt of evidence-based treatment for alcohol use disorder among VA patients with alcohol use disorder and Hepatitis C and/or HIV
Unhealthy alcohol use and alcohol use disorders are highly prevalent among people with hepatitis C virus (HCV) and among people with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) (Armstrong et al., 2006; CDC, 2016; Galvan et al., 2002; Taylor et al., 2016; Tsui et al., 2016; Williams et al., 2016b), and alcohol use has unique harmful effects for persons with each of these infectious diseases. Alcohol and HCV have synergistic impacts on health. Among people with HCV, those who drink heavily are at increased risk for HCV-related liver diseases and mortality compared with those who do not (Donato et al., 2002; Fuster et al., 2014; Hutch...
