Artificial Intelligence-Based Total Mesorectal Excision Plane Navigation in Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery
CONCLUSION AND FUTURE DIRECTIONS: We successfully developed a total mesorectal excision plane image-guided navigation system based on an areolar tissue segmentation approach with high accuracy. This may aid surgeons in recognizing the total mesorectal excision plane for dissection. (Source: Diseases of the Colon and Rectum)

Robotic NICE Procedure Using Handsewn Technique
CONCLUSIONS: Robotic natural orifice intracorporeal anastomosis with transrectal extraction procedure and colorectal end-to-end handsewn anastomosis was feasible and safe in this initial series. This technique can be successfully performed in a total intracorporeal manner without the need for an abdominal wall extraction incision or any circular stapling devices. Cost Consequences of Age and Comorbidity in Accelerated Postoperative Discharge After Colectomy
BACKGROUND: Prospective payment models have incentivized reductions in length of stay after surgery. The benefits of abbreviated postoperative hospitalization could be undermined by increased readmissions or postacute care use, particularly for older adults or those with comorbid conditions. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether hospitals with accelerated postsurgical discharge accrue total episode savings or incur greater postdischarge payments among patients stratified by age and comorbidity. DESIGN: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study. SETTING: National data fr...

Laparoscopic Sacral Mesh Fixation for Ventral Rectopexy: Clinical Implications From a Cadaver Study
CONCLUSIONS: Tack placement showed significant variation in our specimen, emphasising the need for reliable anatomic landmarks and sufficient exposure during ventral mesh rectopexy. Hypogastric nerve plexus involvement is common, thus detailed functional assessment after surgery is required. It also points out the importance of cadaver studies before implementing new surgical techniques into clinical practice. See Video Abstract at http://links.lww.com/DCR/B827. Surgical Repair of Postoperative Perineal Hernia: A Case for the Perineal Approach
CONCLUSIONS: This case series supports the perineal approach for surgical repair; it should be the first approach considered, as it is less invasive and may be associated with shorter length of stay compared to an open transabdominal approach. Male gender and neoadjuvant chemotherapy may be possible risk factors for the development of perineal hernia after abdominoperineal resection. See Video Abstract at http://links.lww.com/DCR/B856.
