Microbiota-Parasite Interaction: Implication of Secretory Immunoglobulin A and P2X7 Receptor Signaling
This study demonstrated that microbiota continually "teach and train" host immunity to attain homeostasis via SIgA production (in T cell-independent and T cell-dependent pathways) and the purinergic receptor P2X7R. In addition, we discussed the potential of manipulating SIgA and P2X7R in immune therapies targeting parasitic infections. Section 2 exhibited parasite-microbiota (microbe-microbe) interactions wherein each can indirectly affect one another through physical and immunogenic alterations and directly via predation, bactericidal protein production, and overlapping of nutrient resources. Thus, microbe-microbe interac...

Review on Sertoli-Leydig Cell Tumours of the Ovary
Discov Med. 2024 Feb;36(181):234-247. doi: 10.24976/Discov.Med.202436181.22.ABSTRACTSertoli-Leydig cell tumours (SLCTs) represent a subset of mixed sex cord-stromal tumours (SCSTs), a rare form of non-epithelial ovarian tumours comprising less than 7% of malignant cases. Among other types of SCSTs, SLCTs are one of the more prevalent types observed in young adults. SLCTs are classified into 5 histologic categories based on differentiation levels and histological variants. Diverse chromosomal and genetic mutations have been identified in SLCTs, with the most well-studied being the genetic mutations observed in the Dicer 1, ...

Growth Differentiation Factor-15 Orchestrates Inflammation-Related Diseases via Macrophage Polarization
Discov Med. 2024 Feb;36(181):248-255. doi: 10.24976/Discov.Med.202436181.23.ABSTRACTMacrophage polarization is a critical determinant of disease progression and regression. Studies on macrophage plasticity and polarization can provide a theoretical basis for the tactics of diagnosis and treatment for macrophage-related diseases. These include inflammation-related diseases, such as sepsis, tumors, and metabolic disorders. Growth differentiation factor-15 (GDF-15) or macrophage inhibitory cytokine-1, a 25 kDa secreted homodimeric protein, is a member of the transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) superfamily that is released ...

Comparison and Evaluation of the Accuracy for Thoracic and Lumbar Pedicle Screw Fixation in Early-Onset Congenital Scoliosis Children
CONCLUSIONS: In children under 10 years of age with early-onset congenital scoliosis, the freehand placement of thoracic and lumbar pedicle screws demonstrates a high level of accuracy. Moreover, complications associated with pedicle screw insertion are infrequent following surgery. It is advisable to exercise caution when placing pedicle screws in thoracic vertebral bodies and morphologically abnormal vertebral bodies, with particular attention to the concave side when screw placement is required in these regions.PMID:38409831 | DOI:10.24976/Discov.Med.202436181.24 (Source: Discovery Medicine)

Salidroside Protects Chondrocytes against IL-1 β-Induced Injury and Alleviates Osteoarthritis Progression by Activating the Nrf2 Pathway
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicate that Sal can alleviate OA progression by promoting anti-oxidant expression and inhibiting degradation enzyme expression. These findings suggest that Sal inhibits the NF-κB pathway and its downstream targets through up-regulating the Nrf2 pathway.PMID:38409832 | DOI:10.24976/Discov.Med.202436181.25 (Source: Discovery Medicine)

The Value of Computed Tomography in Differentiating Heterotopic Pancreas from Small Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor
CONCLUSIONS: Contour, relative enhancement grade, SD, and Lp could effectively differentiate HP from small GIST, demonstrating improved diagnostic performance compared to other parameters. The presence of ductlike structures and surface dimples could further characterize HP. These findings may help distinguish HP from small GIST and avoid unnecessary invasive examination and therapy in individuals with asymptomatic HP.PMID:38409833 | DOI:10.24976/Discov.Med.202436181.26 (Source: Discovery Medicine)

SFRP5 Partially Inhibits the Proliferation and Migration of Airway Smooth Muscle Cells in Children with Asthma by Regulating the Wnt/ β-Catenin Signaling Pathway
CONCLUSIONS: Serum SFRP5 expression decreases in children with asthma. SFRP5 overexpression partially inhibits PDGF-BB-induced HASMC proliferation and migration by regulating the wingless-type mouse mammary tumor virus (MMTV) integration site family (Wnt)/β-catenin pathway.PMID:38409837 | DOI:10.24976/Discov.Med.202436181.30 (Source: Discovery Medicine)
