Mucosa-Associated Microbiota in Patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome: A Comparison of Subtypes
Conclusion: Dysbiosis pattern and the function of the microbiome seem to be different among subtypes of IBS, and MAM may play a crucial role in IBS symptom generation.Digestion (Source: Digestion)

Recent Advances in Molecular Imaging of Colorectal Tumors
Background: Recent endoscopic studies have revealed that small colorectal tumors are often overlooked during colonoscopy, indicating that more sensitive detection methods are needed.Summary: Molecular imaging has received considerable attention as a new endoscopic technique with high sensitivity. It generally employs a fluorescence-labeled compound that specifically binds to a molecule on the tumor. Fluorescent probes for molecular imaging are largely classified as 2 types: a fluorescence-labeled antibody targeting a molecule specifically expressed on the tumor cell surface such as epidermal growth factor receptor or vascu...

A Novel Noninvasive Method for Quantitative Detection of Colonic Dysmotility Using Real-Time Ultrasonography
Conclusions: These findings suggest that ultrasonography is a useful in vivo method for objectively monitoring changes in colonic motility caused by drugs and diseases.Digestion (Source: Digestion)

Approach to the Seamless Management of Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Considering Special Situations, Shared Decision-Making, and Disease Burden
Background: While the number of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients has been steadily increasing, a lot of effective treatments have become available, including biological drugs. However, there still exists no effective treatment universally for all types of IBD patients. We have continuously discussed “Total Care” for IBD patients in the 3 consecutive annual meetings of the Japanese Gastroenterological Association from the 14th meeting to the 16th meeting in 2018–2020.Summary: In the 14th meeting, we summarized cross-sectional issues under the title “From Total Care to Microbiota” as for their subthemes. I...

Endoscopic Ultrasound Elastography as a Novel Diagnostic Method for the Assessment of Hardness and Depth of Invasion in Colorectal Neoplasms
Conclusion: All 3 modalities presented similar diagnostic yield. Inter- and intra-observer agreements of the ES-CRN were substantial, even for non-expert endoscopists. Therefore, EUS-EG may be a useful modality in determining the depth of invasion in colorectal neoplasms.Digestion (Source: Digestion)

Clinical Characteristics and Treatment Outcomes of Patients with Eosinophilic Esophagitis and Eosinophilic Gastroenteritis
Conclusions: We found different clinical characteristics and treatment strategies in the present EoE and EGE cases. Most of the EoE patients responded to and were maintained by acid suppressive therapy, using PPI or vonoprazan. For EGE patients, glucocorticoid administration was mainly used though food-elimination diet therapy also showed beneficial effects.Digestion (Source: Digestion)

The Cutting Edge Research of Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders in Japan: Review on JGA Core Symposium 2018 –2020
Highly impacted articles on functional gastrointestinal (GI) disorders research presented at the core symposium held in the Japanese Gastroenterological Association (JGA) annual meeting 2018 –2020 are selected and summarized. Regarding visceral hypersensitivity and sensor in GI tracts, transient receptor potential vanilloid 4 ion channel and acid-sensitive ion channel were candidates for hypersensitivity in GI tracts. ATP release from vesicular nucleotide transporter may be a key path way to sensitize the nerve endings. Regarding inflammation and mucosal immune responses, patients infected withH. pylori having Ser70 type...

Lipoprotein and Metabolic Profiles Indicate Similar Cardiovascular Risk of Liver Steatosis and NASH
Conclusion: We show in this study that cholesterol profiles, apolipoproteins, and amino acids could function as a potential noninvasive test to screen for NAFLD or even NASH in larger populations. However, few differences in cholesterol profiles were identified between the NAFL and NASH groups, indicating similar cardiovascular risk profiles.Digestion (Source: Digestion)

DNA Methylation and Genetic Aberrations in Gastric Cancer
Background: Gastric cancer (GC) is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide. GC is a pathologically and molecularly heterogeneous disease. DNA hypermethylation in promoter CpG islands causes silencing of tumor-suppressor genes and thus contributes to gastric carcinogenesis. In addition, various molecular aberrations, including aberrant chromatin structures, gene mutations, structural variants, and somatic copy number alterations, are involved in gastric carcinogenesis.Summary: Comprehensive DNA methylation analyses revealed multiple DNA methylation patterns in GCs and classified GC into distinct molecul...
