Dapagliflozin as an adjunct therapy to insulin in the treatment of patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus.
Abstract We have evaluated the efficacy of dapagliflozin in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM1) without adequate control. We expected that adding dapagliflozin to this population on top of their base treatment would lower their HbA1c levels. We conducted a pragmatic, open, 24-week study of treatment with 10 mg of oral dapagliflozin in patients with DM1 and chronic hyperglycemia. We evaluated glycemic control, lipid profile, weight, and insulin dose. Safety was assessed by adverse event reporting. Fasting glucose levels decreased from 176.42 ± 45.33 mg/dL to 139.67 ± 44.42 mg/dL (p =...

Consequences of exercising on ischemia-reperfusion injury in type 2 diabetic Goto-Kakizaki rat hearts: role of the HO/NOS system.
CONCLUSIONS: These results indicate the beneficial role of exercise against myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury in diabetic rats. These observations in experimental diabetes suggest that the cytoprotective mechanism of exercise involves modulation of the nitric oxide synthase/heme oxygenase system and metabolic parameters that may be responsible for cardioprotection. Health-related quality of life in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus in the different geographical regions of Brazil: data from the Brazilian Type 1 Diabetes Study Group.
CONCLUSIONS: Our study points to the existence of additional factors not yet evaluated that could be determinant in the HRQoL of people with T1DM and contribute to these regional disparities. PMID: 26448787 [PubMed] (Source: Diabetes Metab)

Ileal interposition surgery for treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus-pros and cons.
Abstract Nowadays, the surgical techniques for treating type 2 diabetes (T2DM) include: Ileal Interposition (II), Ileal Interposition in combination with Sleeve Gastrectomy (IISG) and Diverted Sleeve Gastrectomy (IIDSG). These procedures are not only for obese subjects, but are also used for non-obese subjects. These types of surgical procedures can improve glycemic control, and lead to a significant reduction in oral hypoglycemic agents (OHAs) and insulin therapy. The results of various studies have shown the safety, feasibility, and efficacy of the surgical procedure for the treatment of T2DM. Although i...

Role of Fenugreek in the prevention of type 2 diabetes mellitus in prediabetes.
CONCLUSIONS: Dietary supplementation of 10 g Fenugreek/day in prediabetes subjects was associated with lower conversion to diabetes with no adverse effects and beneficial possibly due to its decreased insulin resistance. PMID: 26436069 [PubMed] (Source: Diabetes Metab)

Optimizing Weight for Maternal and Infant Health - Tenable, or Too Late?
Abstract Obesity in pregnancy is the leading cause of maternal and fetal morbidity, and gestational weight gain (GWG) is one modifiable risk factor that improves pregnancy outcomes. Most pregnant women gain more than the 2009 Institute of Medicine recommendations, particularly overweight and obese women. GWG even less than the 2009 IOM guidelines in obese women may improve pregnancy outcomes and reduce large-for-gestational-age (LGA) infants, an independent risk factor for childhood obesity, without increasing small-for-gestational-age (SGA) infants. Unfortunately, despite the fact that over 50 interventio...

Diabetes care among elderly medicare beneficiaries with Parkinson's disease and diabetes.
CONCLUSIONS: Among elderly individuals with T2DM, those with PD were less likely to achieve ADA recommended annual HbA1c and lipid testing compared to those without PD. However, PD individuals were more likely to achieve intermediate glycemic and lipid control. PMID: 26442222 [PubMed] (Source: Diabetes Metab)

Moderate calorie restriction to achieve normal weight reverses β-cell dysfunction in diet-induced obese mice: involvement of autophagy.
CONCLUSIONS: Moderate (40 %) CR to achieve normal weight reversed β-cell dysfunction and insulin resistance, and restored glucose homeostasis in DIO mice. Furthermore, the up-regulation of β-cell autophagy may play a role in this process, independent of AMPK activation. PMID: 26445593 [PubMed] (Source: Diabetes Metab)

The Perilipin 2 (PLIN2) gene Ser251Pro missense mutation is associated with reduced insulin secretion and increased insulin sensitivity in Italian obese subjects.
CONCLUSION: We observed a strong significant association between the PLIN2 Pro251 mutation and lower insulin secretion associated with an increased insulin-sensitivity. Frequency of Cancer Events with Saxagliptin in the SAVOR-TIMI 53 Trial.
Abstract The SAVOR-TIMI 53 randomized trial of 16,492 (8,212 on placebo; 8,280 on saxagliptin) treated and followed for a median of 2.1 years afforded an opportunity to explore whether there was any association with cancer reported as a serious adverse event. At least 1 cancer event was reported by 688 (4.1%) patients - 362 (4.3%) and 326 (3.8%) were in the placebo and saxagliptin arms respectively (P = 0.13). There were 59 (0.6%) deaths adjudicated as malignancy deaths with placebo and 53 (0.6%) with saxagliptin. Stratification by gender, age, race and ethnicity, diabetes duration, baseline HbA1c an...

Endogenous androgens and sex hormone-binding globulin in women and risk of metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes.
CONCLUSIONS: This longitudinal population-based study revealed independent inverse associations of SHBG with MetS and T2DM, suggesting low SHBG as a potential risk marker for cardiometabolic morbidity, especially among post-menopausal women.
