New psychoactive substances in emergency medicine
Nervenarzt. 2024 Jan 8. doi: 10.1007/s00115-023-01602-4. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNew psychoactive substances (NPS) are a heterogeneous group of synthetic intoxicating substances. What they have in common is their "new" appearance as a narcotic drug. Many of them imitate known drugs; some of them are derivatives of substances developed as drugs many years ago. Changed or completely newly developed chemical structures often give the NPS a massively increased effect. This includes not only the effects desired by the consumer, but also the undesirable effects with sometimes fatal consequences. The use of NPS has been an ...

Additional functional symptoms in Parkinson's disease and tremor syndromes
Nervenarzt. 2024 Jan 5. doi: 10.1007/s00115-023-01594-1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPatients with Parkinson's Disease or a tremor syndrome may present with additional functional movement disorders. The differential diagnosis is particularly difficult. In some cases, functional symptoms occur either before the manifestation of the organic disease or can emerge as an additional symptom after Parkinson's disease or tremor became apparent. In patients with Parkinson's disease the prevalence for additional functional symptoms is 7 %. In the case that patients with Parkinson's diseases have one side that is more severely affe...

Transcranial direct current stimulation to enhance training effectiveness in chronic poststroke aphasia-A  challenge for recruiting participants
DISCUSSION: The multicenter study DC_TRAIN_APHASIA aims to provide evidence on tDCS as an adjuvant application to increase the effect size of intensive speech-language therapy in chronic post-stroke aphasia. The present review may guide future studies in recruiting samples that involve people with impaired communicative abilities.PMID:38175228 | DOI:10.1007/s00115-023-01572-7 (Source: Der Nervenarzt)

Immunotherapy against gliomas
This article provides an overview of the current status of different immunotherapeutic concepts against gliomas, highlighting the advantages, disadvantages, and challenges. Additionally, it provides an overview of currently ongoing immunotherapeutic clinical trials in Germany and neighboring countries.RESULTS: Previous randomized studies on antibodies against programmed cell death protein 1 (anti-PD1) immune checkpoint inhibition, viral treatment and peptide vaccination targeting the variant III of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFRvIII) in glioblastomas were negative with respect to survival benefits. Conversely, ...

Glioblastomas exploit neuronal properties: a key to new forms of treatment?
Nervenarzt. 2023 Dec 29. doi: 10.1007/s00115-023-01589-y. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRecent research indicates that glioblastomas exhibit different neural properties that successfully promote tumor growth, colonize the brain and resist standard treatment. This opens up opportunities for new therapeutic strategies giving rise to the new research field of cancer neuroscience at the interface between oncology and neuroscience. It has been observed that glioblastomas as well as other incurable brain tumor entities, form multicellular tumor networks through long cell projections called tumor microtubes that are molecularly c...
