chalk A Abstract BACKGROUND: The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) and the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-11, Version 2018) differ with respect to the diagnostic criteria of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The present study investigated the implications of these differences for the classification of PTSD within a sample of German survivors of various traumatic events. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 341 trauma survivors who participated in a multicenter study were classified according to DSM-5 and ICD-11 and th...

[Treatment evaluation in patients with 5q-associated spinal muscular atrophy : Real-world experience].
Kirschner J Abstract Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a progressive autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disease with an incidence of 1:10,000 live births. With a deeper understanding of the molecular basis of SMA in the past two decades, a major focus of therapeutic development has been on increasing the proportion of functionally capable SMN protein by increasing the inclusion of exon 7 in SMN2 transcripts, enhancing SMN2 gene expression, stabilizing the SMN protein or replacing the SMN1 gene. Since June 2017, the antisense oligonucleotide nusinersen/Spinraza® (Biogen GmbH, Ismaning, Germany)...

[Poison in the filter: implementing detoxification procedures in schizophrenia].
Abstract In the history of psychiatry a variety of "blood detoxification" procedures have repeatedly been used to treat schizophrenic disorders under the assumption of autointoxication. In the 1970s this led to the use of dialysis. In addition to the historical classification of this therapeutic approach, particularly the protagonists active in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) as well as the dimension of research and science policy are highlighted. Despite the relatively low success rate of the treatment overall, the question of which patients actually had a positive response to the treatme...

Patients with corresponding symptoms should be closely observed over time with respect to the occurrence of corresponding clinical and imaging leading symptoms. Abstract Neurorehabilitation comprises medical and functional treatment. If patients in the post-hospital phase need acute medical interventions but these cannot be provided by the rehabilitation center, patients must be referred to suitable acute care hospitals; however, such referrals incur additional costs, are fraught with medical risks and delay further rehabilitation. We evaluated how integrating non-neurological medical specialties and a hospital unit into a neurorehabilitation center affects the rate of acute hospital referrals. [Patho- and therapyepigenetics of mental disorders].
Abstract Epigenetic mechanisms, such as DNA methylation and histone modifications are biochemical alterations of the DNA or its spatial structure. They regulate gene function, can be modified by environmental influences and are temporally dynamic. Additionally, findings on epigenetic alterations in the course of pharmacotherapeutic and psychotherapeutic interventions are presented. Epige...

Abstract A severe, often fatal encephalitis needs to be extensively and carefully clarified, especially when it occurs in a patient weeks or months after an organ transplantation. If the donor was viremic at the time of the organ removal or living viruses were present in the organ tissue, many viruses can be transferred to the organ recipient. This has been repeatedly reported in recent years and decades. In this overview rabies is discussed as a particularly important form of viral encephalitis, which is transferred via organs and always has a fatal outcome, because patients carry a high risk of infecti...

Climatic changes, food imports from the tropics and travel behavior have also increased the number of cases of diseases caused by tropical or subtropical viruses in Europe. Due to the close degree of relationship of the flaviviruses, coinfections with several arboviruses can occur. The DENV and JE-V are mosquito-borne infections caused b...
