[Provision of outpatient specialist care for mental disorders : Minor regional differences in treatment needs, major regional differences in availability].
DISCUSSION: The regional inequality of physician and psychotherapist density cannot be explained by regional differences in treatment needs. The results indicate potential improvements in healthcare provision for mental disorders in Germany through the adaptation to actual morbidity rates; however, the definition of treatment needs in mental disorders requires further evaluation. [German neurology and neurologists during the Third Reich: brain research and "euthanasia"]. Nervenarzt. 2016 Jun 29; Authors: Martin M, Karenberg A, Fangerau H Abstract The connection between systematic killing of the mentally ill and disabled, euphemistically called "euthanasia" in the National Socialism ideology, and German brain research has been thoroughly investigated and in detail; however, the impact of this criminal nexus on the image and self-perception of German neurologists as well as the status of neurology as a medical discipline is still the subject of controversial ...

[Fredy Quadfasel (1902-1981) : Neuropsychiatrist, politically persecuted NS opponent and his impact in American exile].
f B Abstract The physician and psychologist Dr. Fredy Quadfasel, born in East Prussia, was trained in neuropsychiatry by Kurt Goldstein in Frankfurt/Main and by Karl Bonhoeffer at the Charité in Berlin. After he was detained by the Gestapo due to political opposition, he was probably denounced for offending the so-called Malicious Practices Act (Heimtückegesetz) from March 1933, and imprisoned for 2-3 months. In 1934/35 he emigrated to the USA via England and Canada, where he initially ran a neuropsychiatry office in New York. Very soon he was able to take on an academic post and became an instructor i...

[Somatic morbidity in the mentally ill].
Abstract In addition to psychosocial impairment, patients with severe mental illness (SMI) are exposed to substantial risks with respect to physical health. Their life expectancy is significantly shortened in the range of 1-2 decades. Against this background common medical comorbidities of this important group of patients are discussed (e.g. cardiovascular, respiratory and metabolic disorders) with a focus on those clinical aspects most relevant for everyday psychiatric practice. Potentials for improvement of curative and preventive health care are outlined. Current scientific and clinical knowledge on somatic hea...

[German neurology and neurologists during the Third Reich: the aftermath].
Abstract The article discusses the consequences for neurology as a discipline which resulted from neurologists' participation in the crimes committed under National Socialism (NS). Chronologically, the current literature distinguishes mainly four overlapping stages: (1) a first phase was characterized by legal persecution and "denazification", which was also the time of the Nuremberg doctors' trial in which no neurologists were on trial. A detailed documentation of the trial for the German medical profession was published by Alexander Mitscherlich. (2) In the subsequent practice of wide amnestying and re...

[German neurology and neurologists during the Third Reich: exemplified by research on epilepsy].
Abstract There are only a small number of studies dealing with the impact of eugenic theories and practices on the research of particular neurological diseases during the Third Reich. Thus, this contribution to the special issue on neurology in Germany between 1933 and 1945 focuses exemplarily on epilepsy research. By drawing on primary sources and secondary literature the article tries to reconstruct the scientific discourse of the time and consider the implications for patients. National socialistic ideology was based on eugenic thinking and the implementation of eugenic policies was a major political objective....

[Connections between sleep and Alzheimer's disease : Insomnia, amnesia and amyloid].
ml;rstl H Abstract Sleep plays an essential role in memory consolidation. Although sleep problems are common in Alzheimer's disease, they are not usually thought to be key features of the disease; however, new experimental research has shown that sleep disturbances not only occur before the onset of typical cognitive deficits but are also associated with the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease and may have a decisive influence on the symptoms and course. Thus, sleep disturbances may be potentially modifiable risk factors for Alzheimer's disease that deserve more attention in research, diagnostics and treatmen...

[Tick-borne encephalitis].
Abstract Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is one of the most important viral infections of the human central nervous system. Approximately 10,000 cases of TBE are referred to hospitals in Europe and Asia each year. The TBE virus (TBEV) is mainly transmitted by tick bites but also occasionally by unpasteurized goat's milk. As in endemic areas on average only 1-3 % of ticks are infected with the TBEV and the clinical manifestation rate is approximately 33 %, only approximately 1 in every 100-300 tick bites leads to disease. The incubation period varies from 5-28 days and typically has a biphasic course of...

[Pain - a neglected neurological issue].
asner G Abstract Chronic pain represents a great challenge; according to epidemiological data increasing numbers of patients should be expected. Based on recent advances, a better understanding of the pathophysiology of chronic pain has been achieved and neurologists have made a major contribution to this understanding. Chronic pain is accompanied by substantial maladaptive plastic alterations in both the peripheral and central nervous systems; therefore, neurological knowledge is of paramount importance for pain therapists but this contrasts with the current treatment situation of pain patients in Germany. [Non-invasive brain stimulation in neurology : Transcranial direct current stimulation to enhance cognitive functioning].
l A Abstract Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been successfully used in neuroscientific research to modulate cognitive functions. Recent studies suggested that improvement of behavioral performance is associated with tDCS-induced modulation of neuronal activity and connectivity. Thus, tDCS may also represent a promising tool for reconstitution of cognitive functions in the context of memory decline related to Alzheimer's disease or aphasia following stroke; however, evidence from randomized sham-controlled clinical trials is still scarce. Initial results of tDCS-induced behavioral improvement in ...

[Suicide in psychiatric hospitals : Results, risk factors and therapeutic measures].
Abstract Suicide prevention is a core responsibility of psychiatry and psychotherapy. Periods of change in psychiatric inpatient treatment concepts are usually also accompanied by an increase in psychopathological behavior and with increased suicide rates in psychiatric hospitals, as seen in the 1970s and 1980s in Germany. That this represented a real increase of inpatient suicides during those years was confirmed and subsequently the number and rate of inpatient suicides has decreased from approximately 280 out of 100,000 admissions of patients in 1980 to approximately 50 in 2014. Death can also occur in psychiat...

Abstract Psychotherapy is an important therapeutic option in the treatment of suicidality. Irrespective of the different treatment settings the psychotherapeutic attitudes, strategies and techniques are presented as they were developed on the basis of cognitive behavioral therapy and psychoanalysis. The problems that led to suicidal ideation have to be exactl...
