PS011 Arterial Stiffness of Lifelong Japanese Pearl Divers
Japanese pearl divers specialize in free diving in the cold sea for collecting foods and pearls in oysters. Each diving maneuver produces the diving reflex. Exercising in the water combined with marked bradycardia and high blood pressure provides a circulatory challenge to properly buffer or cushion elevated cardiac pulsations. To augment the arterial compliance function, diving mammals have adapted the arterial structure such that the ascending aorta is about 3 to 4 times larger than their descending aorta. PS013 Nutritional Labelling and Heart Check Food Certification Programme in Africa: An Overview
The 57th World Health Assembly (WHA) addressed two main risk factors for non-communicable diseases namely; Diet and Physical activity. Globally, Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) deaths are projected to increase by 15% between 2010 and 2020 (to 44 million deaths) and particular concern is the high level of premature mortality from NCDs (deaths before 70 years of age) in several low- and middle-income countries. Poor dietary habits increase the risk of various chronic diseases and premature death. (Source: CVD Prevention and Control)

PS014 Effect of Airborne Particulate Matter on Cardiovascular Diseases in Dammam and Al-Khobar Cities of Kingdom Saudi Arabia
Air pollution is the largest environmental problem which adversely affects the peoples ’ health. The World Health Organization (WHO) recently reported that about 50% of the premature deaths (under the age of 60) in the world are related to outdoor air pollution in urban and rural sources. PS015 Hypertension Related Skills Retention Among Community Health Workers in Rural Western Kenya: Process Evaluation of the Lark Hypertension Study
Hypertension, the leading global risk factor for mortality, is increasing in prevalence in sub-Saharan Africa. LARK is a three-arm, cluster randomized controlled trial investigating whether Community Health Workers (CHWs) in Turbo and Kosirai districts of western Kenya, equipped with tailored behavioral communication strategies and decision support tools (paper-based or smartphone-based vs. usual care), can increase linkage and retention of hypertensive individuals to care, and thereby improve blood pressure. PS016 The Universal Health: Health Services Role in Prevention of CVDS
Americas Region has recognized the Universal Health Coverage as a key element in reducing social inequality and a critical component of sustainable development and poverty reduction. In most low- and middle-income countries health systems are evolving, but often the focus is on hospital centered models of care, struggling with growing burden of costs of CVDs health services. Facing this problem in 2014 the Americas countries have endorsed the Strategy for universal access to health and universal health coverage (CD53.R14) and the concept of Universal Health as access and coverage for all. PS017 Estimation of Salt Intake by 24-Hour Urinary Sodium Excretion: Findings from the Cardiovascular Outcomes in a Papuan Population and Estimation of Risk (Copper) Study
Reducing population level salt intake has been recognized as a priority intervention to tackle the growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Measurement of sodium intake using 24 hour urine collection is the gold standard for estimating population salt intake and a crucial component of any salt reduction programme. Currently there is insufficient evidence for salt intakes in South-East Asia, a region which faces an epidemic of chronic NCDs – responsible for over 60% of deaths. PS018 Task-Shifting of Handheld Echocardiographic Screening for Rheumatic Heart Disease: Longitudinal Performance of Non-Experts in a School-Based Program
Task-shifting of echocardiography (echo) performance and interpretation to non-experts using handheld echo (HHE) offers the best hope for widespread adoption of echo screening for RHD in endemic countries. We have previously reported that non-experts can conduct RHD screening with good sensitivity (83% using criteria that includes mitral regurgitation (MR) ≥1.5cm/44% using criteria that includes MR ≥2.0cm) and specificity (85% – 94%) following a brief, standardized, computer-based training course. Reducing noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and their risk factors to achieve 25% reduction in NCDs by 2025 (25 by 25 goal) can be achieved through implementing cost-effective national and regional policies. However, currently there is limited ability to compare across regions or risk factors, the policy commitments with implemented action in this global NCD effort to achieve the 25 by 25 goal. PS023 The Economic Burden of Heart Diseases in Brazil
Heart disease (HD) is currently the leading cause of death in the Latin American region and expected to remain so for future decades. PS025 La Carta De Santiago: Priorities for Stroke Prevention and Treatment in the Americas
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), stroke claims 5.5 million lives globally each year. As the No. 2 killer worldwide, it is estimated that 17.3 million people die from cardiovascular disease including stroke each year, representing 30% of all global deaths. That equates to six people dying from stroke every 60 seconds and unfortunately the burden of stroke is disproportionately affecting low to middle income countries exceeding those of high income countries by 20%.[1] In some Latin American countries, ischemic heart disease and stroke are ranked as the No. (Source: CVD Prevention and Control)

PS026 The Global Heart Network: A Platform Technology to Connect Stakeholders for Working Together to Bring Cardiac Care to all in Need
The aim of this paper is to highlight the need of NGOs who are involved in the cardiac care. Despite advances in surgical and non-invasive treatment for congenital heart disease (CHD) and Rhematic Heart Fever Disease (RHF) , access to cardiac care remains disproportionate and diverse. Ongoing international humanitarian and in-country programs are working to address these issues with the ultimate goal to increase the quality and quantity of cardiac care, particularly in low middle income regions of the world.
