Baseball performance via the lens of anthropometric testing, fitness metrics, and statistics: a longitudinal cross-sectional study
Background: Anthropometric testing (AT) and fitness metrics (FM) are contributing factors for success in sports. Limited evidence exists regarding longitudinal baseball AT or FM roles on baseball performance statistics (PS). AT, FM, and PS associations were examined for 5 yr to create a performance model. Methods: Eighty collegiate Division I players participated in this study. Height, mass, and body fat percentage (BF%) were selected as AT variables of interest. Grip strength (GS), one repetition maximum squat (1RMSQ), and vertical-jump height were selected for FM. Batting average percentage (AVG), slugging p...

Utilization and costs of postoperative physical therapy after multiligament knee surgery: a retrospective cross-sectional study
Introduction: The aim of this study was to analyze the use of and charges related to physical therapy (PT) after multiligament knee surgery across different postoperative time points and to identify factors related to increased utilization. Methods: The Humana Claims Database was queried for all patients who underwent a multiligament knee reconstruction procedure. We identified patients with a PT-related Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) code at 14 days, 30 days, 90 days, and 6 mo postoperatively. The mean charge per patient and mean number of billed encounters were analyzed. Chi-square and linear regressio...

What is the effect of smoking on postoperative outcomes after ankle-fracture surgery? A retrospective cohort study
Conclusions: This study showed that tobacco smoking had a direct adverse effect on infection rates, union, and return to the operating room in patients who underwent ankle-fracture fixation. These findings reiterated the importance of advocating for smoking cessation to improve postoperative clinical outcomes. Level of Evidence: Level III. (Source: Current Orthopaedic Practice)

Relationship between the time from injury to surgery and the degree of fracture reduction by ligamentotaxis in a posterior instrumentation without fusion for thoracolumbar unstable burst fracture: a retrospective cohort study
Conclusions: The time from the injury to surgery for unstable thoracolumbar burst fractures tends to be shorter with a younger age, and the shorter lead time will cause a weaker negative relationship with correction angle. Level of Evidence: Level III. (Source: Current Orthopaedic Practice)

The debit side of stem-cell joint injections: a prospective cohort study
Conclusions: The frequency (8%) and severity of complications with stem cell-injections is higher than for steroid or viscosupplementation injections (2%). Stem-cell joint injections are a costly and speculative treatment and should only be used with a deep understanding of the risk. Practitioners providing stem cell joint injections must include long-term follow-up as part of their care. Additional validated scientific studies are needed. Level of Evidence: Level II. Benefits of implementation of preoperative education classes for hip and knee arthroplasty
Conclusions: The preoperative education class resulted in alleviation of surgery-related anxiety. The number of patient phone calls to the office were fewer in the joint education group compared with the comparison group, which suggested better understanding about anticipated postoperative experience. The class provided benefits for patients, healthcare providers, and the clinic. Level of Evidence: Level III. (Source: Current Orthopaedic Practice)

Leadership trends among orthopaedic trauma surgery fellowship directors: a cross-sectional demographic review
Conclusions: Our investigation highlighted the qualifications of orthopaedic trauma fellowship directors and can guide future leaders. A select few institutions train a disproportionate share of the current fellowship directors. Gender and racial diversity are limited in this population of leaders. Level of Evidence: Level III. Predictors of efficacy of viscosupplementation for the treatment of hip osteoarthritis: a retrospective cohort study
Background: Hip injections of hyaluronic acid (HA) have been used off-label to treat osteoarthritis (OA). The purpose of this retrospective cohort study of adults with OA was to review predictive factors and duration of action for patients who responded to HA hip injections. Methods: After institutional review board (IRB) approval, patients who had HA hip injections from 2014 to 2018 were retrospectively reviewed. Visual analog scale (VAS) scores obtained 1 mo after three injections were collected. Patients were classified into two groups: positive outcome (50% or greater reduction of VAS) and negative outcome...

Predictors of outcome after total talectomy: a retrospective case series
Conclusions: Talectomy can be used as a salvage procedure to achieve a pain-free, plantigrade, and braceable foot in patients with a variety of musculoskeletal disorders. A tibiocalcaneal angle of less than 90 degrees at final follow-up and a diagnosis of myelomeningocele correlated with “good” clinical outcomes, aiding clinicians in preoperative stratification based on underlying diagnosis.
