Cellular mechanisms and pathways in myocardial reperfusion injury
Despite the progress of cardiovascular medicine, ischemia-reperfusion injury can contribute to increased mortality and prolonged hospitalization after myocardial infarction. Ischemia-reperfusion injury pathophysiology encompasses many cells including cardiomyocytes, fibroblasts, mesenchymal stromal cells, vascular endothelial and smooth muscle cells, platelets, polymorphonuclear cells, macrophages, and T lymphocytes. However, specific mechanisms for all contributing cells and molecular pathways are still under investigation. What is definitely known is that endothelial dysfunction, immunity activation and inflammatory resp...

Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol/apolipoprotein B ratio is superior to apolipoprotein B alone in the diagnosis of coronary artery calcification
Conclusion The LDL-C/ApoB ratio is a superior indicator to ApoB in the diagnosis of subjects with CAC, it can be conveniently used to improve the diagnostic ability of ApoB for CAC. (Source: Coronary Artery Disease)

New carotid plaque, but not the progression of intima-media thickness, predicts the progression of high-risk coronary plaque
Background Carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) is regarded as a controversial risk marker for cardiovascular disease (CVD). We aimed to evaluate the role of CIMT and carotid plaque progression as predictors for the progression of coronary plaque and compositions. Methods In the Garlic 4 study, asymptomatic patients with intermediate CVD risk (Framingham risk score 6–20%) were recruited for a serial carotid ultrasound, and coronary artery calcium score (CAC)/coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) studies for subclinical atherosclerosis at a baseline and 1 year. The association between progression o...

Routine fixed-dose heparin vs. ACT-guided heparin administration for elective PCI and its influence on patient in-hospital outcome: a retrospective study
Objective Activated clotting time (ACT)-based heparin dosing during percutaneous intervention (PCI) is recommended by Society guidelines. However, the relationship between ACT and outcome in the setting of elective PCI has not been sufficiently studied. We sought to evaluate the in-hospital outcome of patients undergoing elective PCI while receiving fixed-dose heparin without ACT measurement versus those with ACT-guided management. Methods This retrospective study included consecutive patients undergoing elective PCI in a single-center between 11/2015 and 12/2018. Patients were divided into two groups, depending...

Association between angiographic and intravascular ultrasound optimizations after new-generation drug-eluting stent implantation and clinical outcomes
Conclusion Despite meeting angiographic optimization criteria in long or CTO lesions, more than one-third of the patients with IVUS-guided new-generation DES implantation failed to meet the IVUS optimization criteria and had worse clinical outcomes. Therefore, IVUS optimization should be considered for patients who had predictors of mismatch. (Source: Coronary Artery Disease)
