The importance of infection control and prevention in anesthesiology
Publication date: Available online 23 November 2017 Source:Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology Author(s): Andrés Zorrilla-Vaca, Kevin Escandón-Vargas The key role of the field of infectious diseases in other medical specialties, including anesthesiology, is currently well known. The anesthesiologist faces a potential risk of contributing to the development of healthcare associated infections in the operating rooms; however, the infectious complications derived from anesthesia have been underestimated. It is important to acknowledge that there are some deficiencies in research, notification, and publication o...

The confusion between asthma and subglottic stenosis can cause an adverse event during intubation. A case report
Publication date: Available online 22 November 2017 Source:Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology Author(s): Gilberto Marrugo-Pardo, Maria Camila Villalobos-Aguirre Wheezing and stridor are a frequent reason for consultation, as well as the diagnosis of asthma. Any cases of asthma with failed clinical response to treatment should undergo additional testing leading to differential diagnoses. The case herein presented emphasizes the importance of having a knowledgeable surgical team that interprets lung function tests correctly. What is the need to place a vascular access for anaesthetic procedures in children?
Conclusion The risk and benefit of any intervention in children should be assessed. The final decision to place a venous access for peri-operative management of children depends on patient age, degree of difficulty of the vascular access, type of procedure, duration and, finally, the anaesthetist's own perception of safety. Individual experience counts when it comes to the final decision. (Source: Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology)

Current use of Resuscitative Endovascular Balloon Occlusion of the Aorta (REBOA) in trauma
Conclusion Resuscitative Endovascular Balloon Occlusion of the Aorta is an alternative that can be used in damage control surgery. It could be effective for early control of bleeding in patients with non-compressible torso haemorrhage. As a complex intervention, REBOA is in its development phase, and the evidence available preclude us from providing strong recommendations. (Source: Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology)

The hidden world of drug interactions in anesthesia
This article dwells on the anesthetic drug interactions: pharmaceutical (mixing or not mixing), pharmacokinetic (alterations in distribution, metabolism, or clearance), pharmacodynamics (synergism, additive effect) and thermodynamic (affinity and intrinsic activity). The basic anesthetic triangle is a current concept and drug interactions are the cornerstone for safe anesthesia. These interactions are currently neglected and hence the anesthetist should recognize any drug interactions for a safer practice of anesthesia. (Source: Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology)
