Biplanar Open Wedge High Tibial Osteotomy in the Medial Compartment Osteoarthritis of the Knee Joint: Comparison between the Aescula and TomoFix Plate.
Authors: Kyung HS, Lee BJ, Kim JW, Yoon SD Abstract BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to compare the results of Aescula and TomoFix plates used for biplanar open wedge high tibial osteotomy in medial osteoarthritis of the knee joint with varus deformity. METHODS: A consecutive series of 50 cases of biplanar open wedge high tibial osteotomy were evaluated retrospectively. Group A contained 25 cases treated by using the Aescula plate, and group T contained 25 cases treated by using the TomoFix plate. Full weight-bearing was permitted at 6 weeks after surgery in group A and at 2 weeks in group T. Clinical ...

The Survivorship and Clinical Results of Minimally Invasive Unicompartmental Knee Arthroplasty at 10-Year Follow-up.
In this study, we investigated the long-term clinical results and survival rate of minimally invasive unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) by collecting cases that had been implanted more than 10 years ago. METHODS: One hundred and twenty-eight patients (166 cases) who underwent Oxford phase 3 medial UKA using the minimally invasive surgery from January 2002 to December 2002 were selected. The mean age of the patients at the time of surgery was 61 years, and the duration of the follow-up was minimum 10 years. Clinical and radiographic assessments were performed using the Knee Society clinical rating system, and the...

Evaluation of the Accuracy and Precision of a Next Generation Computer-Assisted Surgical System.
Authors: Angibaud LD, Dai Y, Liebelt RA, Gao B, Gulbransen SW, Silver XS Abstract BACKGROUND: Computer-assisted orthopaedic surgery (CAOS) improves accuracy and reduces outliers in total knee arthroplasty (TKA). However, during the evaluation of CAOS systems, the error generated by the guidance system (hardware and software) has been generally overlooked. Limited information is available on the accuracy and precision of specific CAOS systems with regard to intraoperative final resection measurements. The purpose of this study was to assess the accuracy and precision of a next generation CAOS system and investigate ...

Gender Affects Early Postoperative Outcomes of Rotator Cuff Repair.
CONCLUSIONS: Women had more pain and slower recovery of shoulder motion than men during the first 3 months after rotator cuff repair. Achilles Tendinosis: Treatment Options.
Authors: Lopez RG, Jung HG Abstract Athletes usually complain of an ongoing or chronic pain over the Achilles tendon, but recently even non-athletes are experiencing the same kind of pain which affects their daily activities. Achilles tendinosis refers to a degenerative process of the tendon without histologic or clinical signs of intratendinous inflammation. Treatment is based on whether to stimulate or prevent neovascularization. Thus, until now, there is no consensus as to the best treatment for this condition. This paper aims to review the common ways of treating this condition from the conservative to the surg...

The importance of proximal fusion level selection for outcomes of multi-level lumbar posterolateral fusion.
CONCLUSIONS: The overall outcome of multi-level lumbar or lumbosacral posterolateral fusion was not as high as we had hoped it would be. Whether the SIV was L2 or L3 was the only significant risk factor identified for poor outcomes in multi-level lumbar or lumbosacral posterolateral fusion in the current study. Thus, the authors recommend that proximal fusion levels be carefully determined when multi-level lumbar fusions are considered. Lessons learnt from an atypical mycobacterium infection post-anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.
Authors: Ng SW, Yee Han DL Abstract Infections following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction are rare, with no previous reports citing Mycobacterium abscessus as the culprit pathogen. A 22-year-old man presented twice over three years with a painful discharging sinus over his right tibia tunnel site necessitating repeated arthroscopy and washout, months of antibiotic therapy, and ultimately culminating in the removal of the implants. In both instances, M. abscessus was present in the wound cultures, along with a coinfection of Staphyloccocus aureus during the second presentation. Though rare, M. abscessus is ...

Total knee arthroplasty in patients with ipsilateral fused hip: a technical note.
We report the surgical technique used to perform posterior-stabilized total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in two patients with a well positioned and functional hip arthrodesis. Intraoperatively, the operating table was placed in an increased Trendelenburg position. Episodically, we flexed the foot of the table by 90° to allow maximal knee flexion to facilitate exposure and bone cuts. We opted to resect the patella and tibia first to enable exposure, given the stiffness of the arthritic knee. One patient's medical condition prohibited complex conversion total hip arthroplasty (THA) prior to the TKA. The other patient's scarre...
