How Did Black and Hispanic Orthopaedic Applicants and Residents Compare to General Surgery Between 2015 and 2022?
CONCLUSION: We found low acceptance of Black residents compared with the higher recruitment of Black applicants, as well as overall low proportions of Black and Hispanic applicants and residents. Future studies might explore the factors contributing to the higher acceptances of Hispanic orthopaedic residents than Black orthopaedic residents.CLINICAL RELEVANCE: We recommend that more emphasis should be placed on increasing Black and Hispanic representation at the department level to ensure cultural considerations remain at the forefront of applicant recruitment. Internal or external reviews of residency selection processes ...

High Area Deprivation Index is Associated With Not Achieving the Patient-acceptable Symptom State After TKA
CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that social and economic factors are associated with patients' perceptions of their overall pain and function after TKA, but such factors are not associated with patients' perceptions of their improvement in symptoms. Patients from areas with higher deprivation may be an at-risk population and could benefit from targeted interventions to improve their perception of their healthcare experience, such as through referrals to nonemergent medical transportation and supporting applications to local care coordination services before proceeding with TKA. Future research should investigate the mecha...

Is a Rapid Recovery Protocol for THA and TKA Associated With Decreased 90-day Complications, Opioid Use, and Readmissions in a Health Safety-net Hospital?
CONCLUSION: Surgeons should consider developing an RRP in health safety-net hospitals. Such protocols emphasize preparing patients for surgery and supporting them through the acute recovery phase. There are possible benefits of neuraxial and nonopioid perioperative anesthesia, with emphasis on early mobility, which should be further characterized in comparative studies. Continued analysis of opioid use trends after discharge would be a future area of interest. Analysis of RRPs with expanded inclusion criteria should be undertaken to better understand the role of these protocols in patients who undergo revision TKA and THA....

Does Periacetabular Osteotomy Change Sagittal Spinopelvic Alignment?
CONCLUSION: PAO increases pelvic incidence, potentially because of anterior translation of the hip center. There were no changes in other spinopelvic parameters postoperatively except after bilateral PAO. Additionally, patients lacking spine mobility preoperatively, indicated by a minimal change in lumbar lordosis between standing and sitting positions, may experience several changes in spinopelvic alignment, including increased mobility of their spine after PAO. This may be because of decreased compensatory spine splinting after increasing acetabular coverage, but further research including patient-reported outcomes is wa...

Health Disparities in Patients With Musculoskeletal Injuries: Food Insecurity Is a Common and Clinically Challenging Problem
CONCLUSION: Food insecurity is common among patients who have experienced orthopaedic trauma, and patients who have it may be at increased risk of superficial infections after surgery. Future research in this area should focus on defining these health disparities further and interventions that could address them.LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level III, therapeutic study.PMID:38564799 | DOI:10.1097/CORR.0000000000003055 (Source: Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research)
