Catatonia in Adolescence: First Onset Psychosis or Anti-NMDAr Encephalitis?
Catatonia is a rare condition that can occur in developmental disorders, but it is more frequently seen in schizophrenia. Recently, a high prevalence of cerebrospinal fluid abnormalities including the detection of antineuronal autoantibodies has been observed in psychotic patients. Among these autoimmune encephalopathies associated with a psychiatric condition, a great deal of attention has been paid to anti–N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAr) encephalitis, which may present, among other things, symptoms such as catatonia, which therefore imposes a differential diagnosis with respect to the early psychosis. The aim of ...

Long-Term Selegiline Monotherapy for the Treatment of Early Parkinson Disease
Objectives The aim of this open-label study was to investigate the long-term safety and efficacy of selegiline as monotherapy in Japanese patients with early Parkinson disease (PD). Methods We conducted a 56-week prospective study in patients with early PD (N = 134) who had previously completed the randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase III trial of selegiline monotherapy for 12 weeks. In the present study, dosing was titrated from 2.5 to 10 mg/d in increments of 2.5 mg/d for 2 weeks. From the seventh week, the dosage was maintained at 10 mg/d until week 56. The primary outcome was any change in the total ...

Curcumin as Add-On to Antipsychotic Treatment in Patients With Chronic Schizophrenia: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Study
Conclusions The promising results of curcumin as an add-on to antipsychotics in the treatment of negative symptoms may open a new and safe therapeutic option for the management of schizophrenia. However, these results should be replicated in further studies. ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT 02298985 (Source: Clinical Neuropharmacology)

Subcutaneous Administration of Carbidopa Enhances Oral Levodopa Pharmacokinetics: A Series of Studies Conducted in Pigs, Mice, and Healthy Volunteers
Objectives Although commercially available levodopa (LD) formulations include carbidopa (CD) or benserazide for gastrointestinal L-aromatic amino acid decarboxylase inhibition, little is known how manipulating CD delivery affects the pharmacokinetics of LD. Our research systematically evaluated the peripheral and central pharmacokinetics of LD during continuous subcutaneous CD delivery. Methods We conducted pharmacokinetic experiments in pigs, mice, and humans to characterize effects of continuous subcutaneous CD delivery co-administered with LD as compared with oral LD/CD administration on LD pharmacokinetics. The po...

Cessation of Skin Picking Symptoms With Methylphenidate Treatment in a Child With Comorbid Skin Picking and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder
Skin picking disorder includes behaviors such as picking, scratching, and squeezing of the normal skin in an impulsive, repetitive manner despite the fact that no dermatological condition is detected. Skin picking disorder may also be comorbid in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and vice versa. There is a great deal of data regarding the efficacy and safety of methylphenidate (MPH) treatment of ADHD. In this article, we report the cessation of skin picking behaviors in a 10-year-old girl diagnosed as having skin picking disorder and ADHD after modified-release MPH treatment. To our knowledge, t...
