Plasma neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin predicts renal tubulointerstitial injury in patients with IgA nephropathy
CONCLUSION: The pNGAL levels in patients with IgAN are positively correlated with the Lee and Oxford classifications of T scores. The level of pNGAL in IgAN patients is found to be a prominent indicator for identification of renal tubulointerstitial injury and perhaps this feature may make it a non-invasive predictor for progression of IgAN.PMID:37942929 | DOI:10.5414/CN111270 (Source: Clinical Nephrology)

Comparative analysis of roxadustat efficacy between maintenance hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis patients
CONCLUSION: Roxadustat can effectively increase the hemoglobin level of maintenance dialysis patients, even in those with low erythropoietin response or erythropoietin resistance, and, more importantly, its efficacy in PD patients was more significant.PMID:37877297 | DOI:10.5414/CN111144 (Source: Clinical Nephrology)

Pitfalls in anticoagulant-related nephropathy
Clin Nephrol. 2023 Oct 25. doi: 10.5414/CN111156. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAnticoagulant-related nephropathy (ARN) is a rare but important disease and often misdiagnosed. The hallmark of the diagnosis is acute kidney injury (AKI) superimposed on preexisting kidney disease due to anticoagulation-induced glomerular hemorrhage with histologic features of widespread tubular obstruction by red blood cells and red cell casts. As ARN is a diagnosis of exclusion only proven by renal biopsy, the diagnosis is often unlikely to be confirmed histologically because of fear of biopsy-related bleeding during anticoagulant therapy. G...

Higher serum trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) levels are associated with increased visceral fat in hemodialysis patients
CONCLUSION: Our results showed that there was a significant positive correlation between serum TMAO levels and visceral fat in HD patients, which suggested that TMAO may predict cardiovascular risk through increased visceral fat.PMID:37877299 | DOI:10.5414/CN111163 (Source: Clinical Nephrology)

The reasons for comparative effectiveness clinical trials of arteriovenous fistula versus graft strategy in older adults on hemodialysis with a catheter
Clin Nephrol. 2023 Oct 25. doi: 10.5414/CN111227. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTClinicians and patients are guided by observational studies to make one of the most consequential decisions for patients with advanced kidney disease: the selection of the "right" hemodialysis vascular access. More than a decade ago, a call for randomized clinical trials was made to equitably compare clinical outcomes between arteriovenous (AV) fistulas (AVFs) and AV grafts (AVGs). Mounting evidence suggests that trade-offs between AVF- and AVGrelated outcomes are context dependent. In this article, we summarize four streams of evidence that co...
