Association of Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Gene Polymorphisms and Nephropathy in Diabetic Patients at a Tertiary Care Centre in South India
Conclusions: Heterozygous I/D genotype was more frequent in the study population (45.8%) than the other genotypes. There was no difference in the genotype distribution in patients with varying levels of albuminuria. (Source: Clinical Medicine Insights: Endocrinology and Diabetes)

Intrathyroidal Parathyroid Cyst: An Unusual Neck Mass
Parathyroid cyst (PC) is a very rare condition. A case of intrathyroidal PC is being reported here in a 53-year-old woman who presented to the endocrine clinic with slowly progressive painless left anterior neck swelling for 1 year with no symptoms of thyroid or parathyroid dysfunction and no compressive symptoms. Ultrasound of the thyroid showed a well-defined cystic lesion measuring 4.7 × 3.6 cm in maximum diameter with internal echoes within the cyst located in the left lobe of the thyroid gland. Fine needle aspiration revealed colorless clear fluid with a high concentration of parathyroid hormone. The patient underwen...

Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis and Primary Hyperparathyroidism: A Case Report
The aim of reporting this case is to highlight the association of two disorders, primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) and slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE). They are usually seen in two different age groups and rarely together. PHPT is a rare cause of SCFE and only 10 cases have been reported in the literature worldwide. The patient in our report is a 13-year-old girl who presented to our clinic with bilateral knee pain and a waddling gait. Subsequent investigations showed that she had PHPT and SCFE with low bone mass. On admission, a parathyroidectomy was performed; then, the slipped femoral epiphyses were fixed with...

Multiple Effects of Growth Hormone in the Body: Is it Really the Hormone for Growth?
In this review, we analyze the effects of growth hormone on a number of tissues and organs and its putative role in the longitudinal growth of an organism. We conclude that the hormone plays a very important role in maintaining the homogeneity of tissues and organs during the normal development of the human body or after an injury. Its effects on growth do not seem to take place during the fetal period or during the early infancy and are mediated by insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) during childhood and puberty. In turn, IGF-I transcription is dependent on an adequate GH secretion, and in many tissues, it occurs indepen...

Hyperglycemia: A Predictor of Death in Severe Head Injury Patients
Objectives: Management of hyperglycemia during an acute sickness in adults is accompanied by improved outcomes. We have designed a prospective study with meticulous attention to exclude all diabetes patients by checking hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c or glycated hemoglobin) to avoid the ill-effects of hyperglycemia in patients with traumatic head injury admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). Methods: This prospective study included adults with traumatic primary brain injury with a Glasgow coma score of ≤8 necessitating mechanical ventilation treated in the period 2012–2015. After screening 311 patients, 220 were included i...

Vitamin D Deficiency Is Associated with Severity of Acute Coronary Syndrome in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes and High Rates of Sun Exposure
The objective of this study was to assess vitamin D as a predictor of the severity in diabetics with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Methods: A total of 166 patients were diagnosed with ACS. Serum 25OHD concentrations were analyzed, and risk factors for ACS were evaluated. Results: Patients diagnosed as having acute myocardial infarction with elevation of the ST segment had a higher rate of 25OHD, (Source: Clinical Medicine Insights: Endocrinology and Diabetes)
