Commutability of a Whole-Blood External Quality Assessment Material for Point-of-Care C-Reactive Protein, Glucose, and Hemoglobin Testing [Point-of-Care Testing]
CONCLUSIONS: Noklus EQA participants using CRP and hemoglobin POC instruments now receive results that are compared with a reference target value, whereas the results for participants using glucose POC instruments are still compared with method-specific target values. Systematic deviations from a reference target value for the commutable glucose POC instruments can be calculated, and this additional information can now be offered to these participants and to the manufacturers. Cardiac and Inflammatory Biomarkers Are Associated with Worsening Renal Outcomes in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: Observations from SAVOR-TIMI 53 [Endocrinology and Metabolism]
CONCLUSIONS: hs-TnT, NT-proBNP, and hs-CRP were each associated with worsening of renal function [reduction in eGFR (≥40%) and deterioration in UACR class] in high-risk patients with T2DM. Patients with high cardiac or inflammatory biomarkers should be treated not only for their risk of cardiovascular outcomes but also followed for renal deterioration. (Source: Clinical Chemistry)

MicroRNA-3162-5p-Mediated Crosstalk between Kallikrein Family Members Including Prostate-Specific Antigen in Prostate Cancer [Molecular Diagnostics and Genetics]
CONCLUSIONS: Our study provides an insight into possible involvement of miR-3162-5p in PCa etiology by targeting KLKs and AR. It highlights clinical utility of miR-3162-5p and its interactive axis as a new class of biomarkers and therapeutic targets for PCa. (Source: Clinical Chemistry)

Generation of Highly Biomimetic Quality Control Materials for Noninvasive Prenatal Testing Based on Enzymatic Digestion of Matched Mother-Child Cell Lines [Molecular Diagnostics and Genetics]
CONCLUSIONS: The DENQCMs are universally applicable for different platforms. We propose DENQCMs as an approach to produce matched maternal and fetal cfDNA that will be suitable for the preparation of quality control materials for NIPT. (Source: Clinical Chemistry)

Dairy Intake and Body Composition and Cardiometabolic Traits among Adults: Mendelian Randomization Analysis of 182041 Individuals from 18 Studies [Nutrition]
CONCLUSIONS: The present study provides evidence to support a potential causal effect of higher dairy intake on increased lean mass among adults. Our findings suggest that the observational associations of dairy intake with lipids and glycemic traits may be the result of confounding. (Source: Clinical Chemistry)

Interferon-Inducible Myxovirus Resistance Proteins: Potential Biomarkers for Differentiating Viral from Bacterial Infections [Review]
BACKGROUND: In 2015, the 68th World Health Assembly declared that effective, rapid, low-cost diagnostic tools were needed for guiding optimal use of antibiotics in medicine. This review is devoted to interferon-inducible myxovirus resistance proteins as potential biomarkers for differentiating viral from bacterial infections. CONTENT: After viral infection, a branch of the interferon (IFN)-induced molecular reactions is triggered by the binding of IFNs with their receptors, a process leading to the activation of mx1 and mx2, which produce antiviral Mx proteins (MxA and MxB). We summarize current knowledge of the structure...
