Increased serum SGLT2 and its potential diagnostic and prognostic value in patients with acute ischemic stroke
CONCLUSIONS: The serum SGLT2 concentration may be a potential biomarker for the diagnosis of AIS. However, it does not exhibit any association with disease severity or functional prognosis.PMID:38373585 | DOI:10.1016/j.clinbiochem.2024.110733 (Source: Clinical Biochemistry)

Imprecision of high-sensitivity cardiac troponin assays at the female 99th-percentile
CONCLUSIONS: The number of instruments achieving a CV ≤ 10.0 % at the female 99th-percentile URL varies by manufacturer and by instrument. Monitoring assay precision at the female URL is necessary for some assays to ensure optimal use of this threshold in clinical practice.PMID:38360198 | DOI:10.1016/j.clinbiochem.2024.110731 (Source: Clinical Biochemistry)

The significance of PCSK-9's level and polymorphism in premature coronary artery disease: Relation to risk and severity
CONCLUSION: Circulating PCSK9 and caspase-3 concentrations were higher in PCAD patients and were associated with CAD severity. The SNPs of PCSK-9 (rs2483205) and OLR-1 (rs11053646) were associated with PCAD and its severity.PMID:38342398 | DOI:10.1016/j.clinbiochem.2024.110729 (Source: Clinical Biochemistry)

Dose optimization and target attainment of vancomycin in children
Clin Biochem. 2024 Feb 5:110728. doi: 10.1016/j.clinbiochem.2024.110728. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTVancomycin is a glycopeptide antibiotic that has been adopted in clinical practice to treat gram-positive infections for more than 70 years. Despite vancomycin's long history of therapeutic use, optimal dose adjustments and pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) target attainment in children are still under debate. Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) has been widely integrated into pediatric clinical practice to maximize efficacy and safety of vancomycin treatment. Area under the curve (AUC)-guided TDM has been recently re...

High poly- γ-glutamic acid-containing natto improves lipid metabolism and alters intestinal microbiota in mice fed a high-fat diet
J Clin Biochem Nutr. 2024 Jan;74(1):47-56. doi: 10.3164/jcbn.23-35. Epub 2023 Sep 16.ABSTRACTSeveral beneficial effects of poly-γ-glutamic acid (γ-PGA) have been reported. To test whether natto, a fermented soy food rich in γ-PGA, can improve intestinal microbiota content and lipid metabolism in a high-fat diet, we compared the intestinal microbiota content, plasma, liver, and fecal contents, and changes in gene expression in the livers and large intestines of a group of mice fed a high-fat diet supplemented with cooked soybeans (SC group) and a group fed a high-fat diet supplemented with natto (NA group) for 42 days; h...

Miso, fermented soybean paste, suppresses high-fat/high-sucrose diet-induced muscle atrophy in mice
This study investigated the effects of miso, a traditional fermented soybean food in Japan, on muscle mass atrophy. Eight week old male C57BL/6J mice were fed high fat/high sucrose diet with or without miso for 12 weeks. A miso diet increased soleus muscle weights (p<0.05) and reduced intraperitoneal glucose tolerance and insulin tolerance (p<0.05). The miso diet downregulated the Tnfα and Ccl2 expression, related to inflammation, and Trim63 and Fbxo32 expression, related to muscle atrophy, in the soleus muscle (p<0.05). The miso diet increased short-chain fatty acids levels, including acetic, propanoic, and buta...

Iron from the gut: the role of divalent metal transporter 1
J Clin Biochem Nutr. 2024 Jan;74(1):1-8. doi: 10.3164/jcbn.23-47. Epub 2023 Oct 17.ABSTRACTMammalian cells contain thousands of metalloproteins and evolved systems to correctly incorporate metal cofactors into their designated sites. Among the transient metals in living cells, iron is the most abundant element that present as an iron sulfur cluster, mono- and dinuclear iron centers or heme for catalytic reactions. Iron homeostasis is tightly regulated by intestinal iron absorption in mammals owing to the lack of an iron excretive transport system, apart from superficial epithelial cell detachment and urinary outflow reabso...
