Alpha ‐defensins (α‐Defs) in Crohn's disease: Decrease of ileal α‐Def 5 via permanent methylation and increase in plasma α‐Def 1‐3 concentrations offering biomarker utility
Conclusions: Plasma α‐Defs 1‐3 concentrations correlate with the degree of inflammation and appear to be specific biomarkers of ileal‐CD at diagnosis. Ileal α‐Def 5 expression is permanently downregulated by methylation. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved. (Source: Clinical and Experimental Immunology)

Activation of plasmacytoid dendritic cells by apoptotic particles  – mechanism for the loss of immunological tolerance in Sjögren's syndrome
Summary Sjögren's syndrome (SS) is a common autoimmune disease targeting salivary and lacrimal glands. It is strongly female‐dominant, characterized by low oestrogen levels combined with a local intracrine dihydrotestosterone defect. We hypothesized that these hormonal deficits lead to increased apoptosis of the epithelial cells and plasmacytoid dendritic cell (pDC)‐mediated proinflammatory host responses. Expression of Toll‐like receptors (TLRs)‐7 and ‐9 and cytokine profiles was studied in pDCs treated with apoptotic particles collected in consecutive centrifugation steps of media from apoptotic cells. Express...

RNA ‐sequencing study of peripheral blood mononuclear cells in sporadic Meniere's disease patients: possible contribution of immunologic dysfunction to the development of this disorder
In conclusion, our study first offers a new perspective in MD development on the basis of RNA expression patterns, suggesting that immune factors might be involved in the MD pathogenesis. Remarkably, GSTM1 might be a possible candidate gene for the diagnostic biomarker of MD and provides the basis for further biological and functional investigations. Analysis of the regulatory function of natural killer cells from patients with systemic lupus erythematosus
Summary Natural killer (NK) cells participate in the regulation of the immune response. However, the immunomodulatory function of NK cells in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is not well understood. The aim of this study was to evaluate the regulatory function of NK cells in SLE patients and to identify the NK cells involved in the pathogenesis of this complex disease. We analysed the expression of NK receptors and co‐stimulatory molecules in peripheral NK cells (CD3–CD56+) from SLE patients, as well as the numbers of human leucocyte antigen D‐related (HLA‐DR)/CD11c+ NK cells. In addition, NK cell regulatory func...
