Learning from Adolescents and Caregivers to Enhance Acceptability and Engagement Within Virtual Dialectical Behavior Therapy for Adolescents Skills Groups: A Qualitative Study
Child Psychiatry Hum Dev. 2024 Jan 6. doi: 10.1007/s10578-023-01641-7. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDespite the significant increase in adolescent mental health challenges in recent years, structural barriers continue to limit access to and engagement in mental health services. As such, opportunities to learn directly from adolescents and their families on how to best structure and deliver services are paramount. The current study assumes a multi-informant approach and reports on adolescents' and caregivers' (N = 33) experiences in an adapted telehealth/hybrid Dialectical Behavior Therapy for Adolescents (DBT-A) program. ...

Assessing Theory of Mind in Children: A Tablet-Based Adaptation of a Classic Picture Sequencing Task
Child Psychiatry Hum Dev. 2024 Jan 2. doi: 10.1007/s10578-023-01648-0. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCorrectly assessing children's theory of mind (TOM) is essential to clinical practice. Yet, most tasks heavily rely on language, which is an obstacle for several populations. Langdon and Coltheart's (Cognition 71(1):43-71, 1999) Picture Sequencing Task (PST), developed for research purposes, avoids this limitation through a minimally-verbal procedure. We thus developed a tablet adaptation of this task for individual application, engaging children's motivation and allowing response times collection. To assess this tablet-PST...

The Relationship Between Early Term Birth and the Risk of Later Childhood Mental Disorders Within a Pregnancy Cohort
This study examines whether gestational age, birth weight, and early term birth is associated with childhood mental disorders in 342 pregnant women recruited at less than 20 weeks gestation and were then followed up until 4 years postpartum, including 93 children born at early term. Women were assessed at recruitment using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM. At 4 years of age their children were assessed using the Preschool Age Psychiatric Assessment (PAPA) and the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL). This study found earlier birth predicted an increased risk for anxiety disorders and demonstrated a significant interact...

Evaluating the Interrater Reliability of the Icelandic Version of K-SADS-PL DSM-5
This study aims to analyse the interrater reliability of the Icelandic translation of K-SADS-PL, DSM-5 version. K-SADS-PL was administered to a clinical sample of outpatients from the Icelandic Anxiety Centre for Children, Adolescents, and Young Adults, and The Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Landspítali, the National University Hospital in Reykjavík, Iceland. In total, 135 patients aged 6-18 were included in this study. We assessed the interrater reliability using Cohen's κ, with results ranging from poor to excellent (0.3-1.0), though most disorders showed excellent reliability (κ > 0.75). The Ice...

Measurement Choices for Youth Suicidality
Child Psychiatry Hum Dev. 2023 Dec 26. doi: 10.1007/s10578-023-01627-5. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSuicide is among the leading causes of death among individuals ages 10-24, making suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STBs) a serious public health crisis among youth. Suicide risk screening and assessment are vital to addressing this public health crisis. In fact, many youths that screen positive for suicidal ideation do not have known mental health concerns and would have been missed if not asked directly. Medical settings are an optimal setting to detect suicidality early and provide appropriate follow-up monitoring and ca...

Parent Mental Health Before and During the COVID-19 Pandemic
Child Psychiatry Hum Dev. 2023 Dec 23. doi: 10.1007/s10578-023-01642-6. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAlthough extant cross-sectional data suggest that parents have experienced numerous challenges (e.g., homeschooling, caregiver burden) and mental health consequences during the COVID-19 pandemic, longitudinal data are needed to confirm mental health changes relative to pre-pandemic levels and identify which specific pandemic-related changes most highly predict mental health during the pandemic. In two longitudinal subsamples (N = 299 and N = 175), we assessed change in anxiety, depression, and stress before and during the ...
