Parent Involvement in Mental Health Treatment for Autistic Children: A Grounded Theory-Informed Qualitative Analysis
This study presents a conceptual framework of successful parent involvement in CBT for autistic children. Seventeen therapists (94% female) and 11 mothers were interviewed about their involvement in a CBT program for autistic children ages 8-13 years. The conceptual framework depicts how parent involvement varies depending on child, parent, and environmental factors. Parents' contributions to therapy were grouped into five main roles. Parents' beliefs and attitudes toward therapy also influenced their involvement. This is the first study to empirically investigate how parents of autistic children contribute to the therapeu...

Examining the Longitudinal Relationship Between Metacognitive Beliefs and Psychological Distress in an Adolescent Population: A Preliminary Analysis
Child Psychiatry Hum Dev. 2023 Oct 13. doi: 10.1007/s10578-023-01611-z. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAdolescence is a period marked by significant vulnerability to the onset of mental health concerns. Within adults, the metacognitive model of psychological disorders advocates for the involvement of metacognitive beliefs in the onset, and maintenance, of psychopathology. The current study aimed to assess the applicability of the metacognitive model in adolescence by exploring the relationship, as well as the trajectory, between metacognitive beliefs and psychological distress. The longitudinal prospective cohort study inve...

Using Nightly Sleep Guidelines to Address Links Between Adolescents' Self-Reported Weekly Sleep Patterns and Anxiety and Depression Symptoms
Child Psychiatry Hum Dev. 2023 Oct 12. doi: 10.1007/s10578-023-01610-0. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTShort and long nightly sleep durations are associated with anxiety and depression symptoms among adolescents. However, studies have not used recommended hours of nightly sleep or focused on sleep patterns across weekdays and weekends in examining links with anxiety and depression symptoms. The present study included 709 adolescents in Grade 11 (402 females; 307 males) who self-reported hours of sleep on weeknights and weekends and anxiety and depression symptoms. Using the recommended 8-10 h to define average nightly sleep...

Comprehensive Health Assessment for Children in Out-of-Home Care: An Exploratory Study of Service Needs and Mental Health in a Norwegian Population
Child Psychiatry Hum Dev. 2023 Oct 12. doi: 10.1007/s10578-023-01619-5. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA comprehensive model for routine multi-disciplinary health assessment for children in out-of-home care was piloted in a Norwegian region. This paper reports on identified service needs and mental disorders among 196 children (0-17 years) receiving the assessment. Cross-sectional data was extracted from assessment reports. Results show needs across a range of services, with a mean of 2.8 recommended services for children aged 0-6 and 3.3 for children aged 7-17. Mental disorders were identified in 50% of younger children, a...

Longitudinal Associations from Maternal and Paternal Internalizing Symptoms to Preschooler's Problem Behavior and Social Competence in China: The Mediating Role of Executive Function
Child Psychiatry Hum Dev. 2023 Oct 11. doi: 10.1007/s10578-023-01613-x. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBy using a two-year longitudinal design, the current study recruited 199 preschoolers and their parents in Beijing to examine the effects of parental internalizing symptoms (T1) on children's internalizing and externalizing problem behavior and social competence (T3), and further explore whether executive function (EF, T2) may act as the mediator. The results showed that maternal internalizing symptoms and paternal internalizing symptoms at T1 separately had significant direct predictive effect on children's internalizing ...

The Influence of Pandemic-Related Worries During Pregnancy on Child Development at 12 Months
Child Psychiatry Hum Dev. 2023 Oct 8. doi: 10.1007/s10578-023-01605-x. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe COVID-19 pandemic has been linked to increased risk for perinatal anxiety and depression among parents, as well as negative consequences for child development. Less is known about how worries arising from the pandemic during pregnancy are related to later child development, nor if resilience factors buffer negative consequences. The current study addresses this question in a prospective longitudinal design. Data was collected from a sub-study (n = 184) of a longitudinal study of pregnant individuals (total n = 1173). Du...

Helping Clinicians Conceptualise Behavioural Insomnia in Children: Development of the Manifestations and Vulnerabilities of Behavioural Insomnia in Childhood Scale (MAVBICS)
Child Psychiatry Hum Dev. 2023 Oct 5. doi: 10.1007/s10578-023-01606-w. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis paper outlines the development and psychometric evaluation of the Manifestations and Vulnerabilities of Behavioural Insomnia in Childhood Scale (MAVBICS), an instrument intended to assess the manifestations of, and factors underpinning, child behavioural insomnia. The MAVBICS comprises two sections: a more general sleep and bedtime information section (Section 1), and a psychometric measure of six theoretically derived factors that underlie, contribute to, and are manifestations of, child sleep problems (Section 2), th...
