Differential impact of perfluorooctanoic acid and fluorotelomer ethoxylates on placental metabolism in mice
In this study, we investigated the effect of PFAS on placental metabolism by exposing healthy, pregnant CD-1 mice to PFOA or FTEOs at one of three concentrations (0 ng/L (controls), 5 ng/L, 100 ng/L) (n = 7-8/group). While PFOA is banned and PFOA concentrations in human blood are decreasing, we hypothesize that FTEOs will cause adverse pregnancy outcomes similar to PFOA, the compounds they were meant to replace. Placental tissue samples were collected at embryonic day 17.5 and 1H solid-state magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy was used to determine the relative concentration of placental metabolite...

Enhanced methane recovery from anaerobic membrane bioreactor coupled with cold plasma pretreatment for rapid hydrolysis and nitrogen removal
This study assessed raw and CP-pretreated TSWS in an anaerobic sequencing batch reactor (ASBR) and anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR). The effects of incremental organic loading rates (OLR) and nitrogenous compounds concentration on enhanced CH4 bioconversion efficiency were evaluated. We found that the AnMBR outperformed the ASBR, with an overall chemical oxygen demand (COD) conversion rate of 67%, lower total nitrogen (T-N) accumulation (594 mg L-1), and an overall methane yield of 0.24 L CH4 g-1 COD. CP pretreatment improved TSWS AD, resulting in more efficient COD removal and methane recovery. This study suggests th...

Adsorption of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) on Ni: A DFT investigation
In this study, a systematic ab initio investigation of PFAS adsorption on Ni, a widely used electrocatalyst, was conducted by means of dispersion-corrected Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. The objective of this investigation was to elucidate the adsorption characteristics and charge transfer mechanisms of different PFAS molecules on Ni surfaces. PFAS adsorption on three of the most thermodynamically favorable Ni surface facets, namely (001), (110), and (111), was investigated. Additionally, the role of PFAS chain length and functional group was studied by comparing the adsorption characteristics of different P...

Dipole Moment Regulation for Enhancing Internal Electric Field in Covalent Organic Frameworks Photocatalysts
Chemosphere. 2024 Apr 8:141947. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2024.141947. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCovalent organic frameworks (COFs) have recently emerged as a kind of promising photocatalytic platform in addressing the growing threat of trace pollutants in aquatic environments. Along this, we propose a strategy of constructing internal electric field (IEF) in COFs through the dipole moment regulation, which intrinsically facilitates the separation and transfer of photogenerated excitons. Two COFs of BTT-TZ-COF and BTT-TB-COF are developed by linking the electron-donor of benzotrithiophene (BTT) block and the electron-...

Role of biochar in superoxide-dominated dye degradation in catalyst-activated peroxymonosulphate process
Chemosphere. 2024 Apr 8:141945. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2024.141945. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn recent times, the application of biochar (BC) as an upcoming catalyst for the elimination of recalcitrant pollutants has been widely explored. Here, an iron loaded bamboo biochar activated peroxymonosulphate (PMS) process was tested for removing Congo red (CR) dye from water medium. The catalyst was synthesized using a green synthesis method using neem extracts and characterized using SEM, FTIR, and XRD. The effects of various operating parameters, including solution pH, catalyst dosage, and pollutant dosage, on dye deg...

Polyhydroxyalkanoate recovery overview: properties, characterizations, and extraction strategies
Chemosphere. 2024 Apr 8:141950. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2024.141950. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDue to their excellent properties, polyhydroxyalkanoates are gaining increasing recognition in the biodegradable polymer market. These biogenic polyesters are characterized by high biodegradability in multiple environments, overcoming the limitation of composting plants only and their versatility in production. The most consolidated techniques in the literature or the reference legislation for the physical, chemical and mechanical characterisation of the final product are reported since its usability on the market is still...
