Abstract C90: Examining racial and ethnic disparities in HPV awareness and the association of trust in cancer information from physicians among males
Conclusion: In general, men are not receiving the information about the HPV or how it is transmitted. Furthermore, racial/ethnic differences were found in being informed about the HPV vaccine and trust in receiving cancer information from physicians. Findings suggest that men's lack of knowledge about HPV and the lack of trust of cancer information from physicians may be linked to a lack of HPV vaccinations. Future health communications efforts should explore community-based and culturally sensitive methods to disseminate HPV information to men.Note: This abstract was not presented at the conference.Citation Format: Dexter...

Abstract A88: A Preliminary Assessment of the Potential Impact of the Affordable Care Act on Breast Cancer Stage
Conclusion: The ACA's elimination of copayments/co-insurance for preventive services such as cancer screening may have a meaningful impact on cancer outcomes. A preliminary assessment shows that it may lead to a shift in earlier stage breast cancers. The elimination of these out-of-pocket expenses for mammograms may particularly benefit Latina women who tend to have lower screening rates. These study findings should be interpreted in light of its limitations such as its cross-sectional design and lack of mammography screening assessment. More research is needed to understand the impact of the ACA on cancer care and outcome...

Abstract C87: Provider characteristics and timely receipt of cancer screening: The role of communication and race/sex concordance between patients and providers
Conclusions: Association between sex concordance with breast and cervical cancer screening suggests that either female providers are more likely to recommend them because of better attunement to female preventive needs or patients are more comfortable receiving them from female providers. Results on communication patterns indicate that both measures that were significant, were related to providers' soliciting response from patients which may encourage patient activation and facilitate receipt of cancer screening especially among racial and ethnic minorities. Thus, greater patient involvement and encouraging dialogue with p...

Abstract A87: [Advocate Abstract:] Bridging the Gap Between Science and Patient Advocacy
There are plenty of ways that scientific community and cancer advocacy community can partner. Both parties face the cancer priorities each day. It is imperative to advocate for the cancer drug parity act, advocate for better access to clinical trials, and educate survivors. It is understandable that researchers lose track of the bigger picture, however advocates can provide a cancer survivor's perspective to incredible talented group of scientist who are the front lines in the battle to cure cancer.Citation Format: Wayne Dornan. Abstract C86: Distance to free and low cost screening centers and cervical cancer screening behaviors of low income women in New Jersey
Racial/ethnic disparities in cancer outcomes have been well documented. Access to Pap testing may account for some of the variation in the racial and socioeconomic differences in cervical cancer outcomes. The rate of Pap testing within the past three years has been shown to vary by both race/ethnicity and by access to medical care. Given this, there has been an increase in the use of GIS to explore and understand cancer screening behaviors. The goal of this analysis was to evaluate and characterize the relationship between geographic proximity to free or low-cost cancer screening facilities and screening behaviors among lo...

Abstract C85: Do African-American veterans need distinct "Prostate Cancer Screening Guidelines" to overcome outcome disparities?
Conclusion: 1. Because there is no cure for metastatic prostate cancer, early diagnosis and intervention for African-American veterans will lead to saving lives; specific guidelines for prostate cancer will be very beneficial. 2. This will also decrease the costs of treating recurrent and metastatic disease and conserve the resources of the VA Health System. 3. Because the Veterans Health System is equal access, it is an optimal environment to test different prostate cancer screening guidelines for African Americans. 4. Specific draft guidelines will be presented.References:1. Shenoy D, Packianathan S, Chen AM, Vijayakumar...

Abstract B84: Practical risk assessment: Identifying women at risk for hereditary cancer in a low-income cancer clinic
Conclusions: A hereditary risk assessment strategy utilizing a 10-item RISK tool is an effective means for physicians practicing in a low-income, predominantly African-American clinic to easily identify appropriate patients with history of breast cancer for genetic counseling referral. Further, the extremely high participation rate of this patient population may indicate a high level of interest in genetic screening. Importantly, a number of patients did not follow through and attend the genetic counseling appointments; we are studying the reasons behind this lack of follow-through. Overall, this strategy could be easily i...

Abstract B83: Elements of theoretical models of health behavior: Planning for breast cancer screening interventions in an American Indian tribe
Conclusions: Study findings point to opportunities for tribal health and Indian Health Service (IHS) providers and staff to intervene in two broad areas. 1. Some findings associated with social support, planned behavior, and health beliefs can be used to design patient intake forms to alert tribal health and IHS providers to current and potentially non-adherent. 2. Using this information, providers can design interventions to move non-adherent and potentially non-adherent women toward persistent mammographic screening participation. An intervention study will be funded by the Minnesota Department of Health through its Elim...

Abstract A83: Development of a New Inter-Institutional Partnership to Assess Health Literacy Disparities in the Context of Kidney Cancer and Smoking
Background: Kidney cancer mortality rates are significantly higher among individuals diagnosed with later-stage disease, but there are currently no efficacious methods for kidney cancer screening. As a result, primary prevention via reduction of modifiable risk factors such as smoking, as well prompt diagnosis following early symptoms of the disease, are key to reducing kidney cancer mortality.Recent research conducted at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine (SIUSOM) has found that rural residents of Southern and Central Illinois have some of the highest kidney cancer incidence and mortality rates in the nation....

Abstract C82: Correlates of enrollee retention in a community-based breast cancer screening program
CONCLUSION: This community-based cancer screening program engaged women from its target population in breast cancer screening. Several factors associated with program retention were identified, this information can be used to direct future program outreach and planning efforts. Our findings suggests that program retention was associated with likelihood of breast cancer diagnosis, however, the initial program screen had the greatest association with breast cancer diagnosis.Citation Format: Shana O.
