A pattern ‐based risk‐stratification scheme for salivary gland cytology: A multi‐institutional, interobserver variability study to determine applicability
CONCLUSIONSThe proposed pattern‐based risk‐stratification scheme, which could be implemented with the forthcoming Milan System, has good overall interobserver agreement and successfully stratifies the risk of malignancy. Some simplification is possible to make the system easier to use and improve interobserver agreement while maintaining stratification of risk. Cancer Cytopathol 2017. © 2017 American Cancer Society. Identification of distinct cytomorphologic features in the diagnosis of NIFTP at the time of preoperative FNA: Implications for patient management
CONCLUSIONSThis study demonstrates that NIFTP cases have distinguishing cytomorphologic characteristics in comparison with invasive FVPTC cases. Therefore, a preoperative cytologic evaluation provides clues that can aid in the distinction between NIFTP and its invasive counterparts. Cancer Cytopathol 2017. © 2017 American Cancer Society. Computer ‐assisted cytologic diagnosis in pancreatic FNA: An application of neural networks to image analysis
CONCLUSIONSThe results of the current study demonstrate that computer models can be used successfully to distinguish benign from malignant pancreatic cytology. The fact that the model can categorize atypical cases into benign or malignant with 77% accuracy highlights the great potential of this technology. Although further study is warranted to validate its clinical applications in pancreatic and perhaps other areas of cytology as well, the potential for improved patient outcomes using MNN for image analysis in pathology is significant. Core ‐needle biopsy of breast cancer is associated with a higher rate of distant metastases 5 to 15 years after diagnosis than FNA biopsy
CONCLUSIONSAt 5 to 15 years after diagnosis of the primary tumor, CNB‐diagnosed patients had significantly higher rates of distant metastases than FNAB‐diagnosed patients. Performance of ovarian cyst fluid fine ‐needle aspiration cytology
CONCLUSIONSOvarian cyst fluid cytology is highly specific and moderately sensitive for the detection of ovarian malignancies. A negative FNA is reassuring for patients with a low pretest probability of malignancy. Cancer (Cancer Cytopathol) 2017. © 2017 American Cancer Society. (Source: Cancer Cytopathology)

Discrepant HPV/cytology cotesting results: Are there differences between cytology ‐negative versus HPV‐negative cervical intraepithelial neoplasia?
CONCLUSIONSThere are no significant clinical or pathologic differences between NILM/HPV‐positive and ASCUS‐positive/HPV‐negative CIN‐3–positive specimens. Cytologic sampling or interpretation remains the main reason for discrepancies. However, HPV‐negative CIN‐3 with positive cytology exists and may be missed by primary HPV screening.
