Canadian organ donation organizations ’ donor audit processes: an environmental scan
ConclusionThere is significant variability across Canadian ODOs in the methodology, definitions, timeliness, data collection, and reporting of DAs. This underscores the need for a national donor audit strategy to reduce preventable harm from MDOs to patients/families at end of life and those on transplant waitlists. Troponin elevation as a marker of short deterioration and one-year death in a high-risk surgical patient cohort in a low and middle income country setting: a postoperative approach to increase surveillance
ConclusionThis study supports evidence that hsTnT is an important prognostic marker and a strong predictor of all-cause mortality after surgery. Troponin measurement in high-risk surgical patients could potentially be used as tool to scale-up care in LMIC settings.Study registrationClinicalTrials.gov (NCT04187664); first submitted 5 December 2019. Cold-stored platelets for acute bleeding in cardiac surgical patients: a narrative review
ConclusionCold-stored platelets may have several advantages over RTP, including increased hemostatic capacity, extended shelf-life, and reduced risk of bacterial contamination. Large clinical trials are needed to establish their potential role in the treatment of acutely bleeding patients. (Source: Canadian Journal of Anesthesia)

The effect of class 3 obesity on the functionality of supraglottic airway devices: a historical cohort analysis with propensity score matching
ConclusionPatients with class 3 obesity (BMI  ≥ 40 kg·m–2) had greater than three-fold odds of nonfunctional intraoperative SGAs than patients without class 3 obesity. (Source: Canadian Journal of Anesthesia)

Reducing rebound pain severity after arthroscopic shoulder surgery under general anesthesia and interscalene block: a two-centre randomized controlled trial of pre-emptive opioid treatment compared with placebo
ConclusionHydromorphone 2 mg given six hours after interscalene block did not reduce the severity of rebound pain postoperatively compared with placebo in patients undergoing arthroscopic shoulder surgery.Study registrationClinicalTrials.gov (NCT02939209); registered 19 October 2016.
