Accuracy of the Nova StatStrip ® glucometer in patients undergoing major abdominal surgery: an observational study
ConclusionThe Nova StatStrip glucometer was accurate in patients undergoing major upper abdominal surgery, independent of the administration of high-dose insulin therapy.Study registrationClinicalTrials.gov (NCT01528189); registered 7 February 2012. (Source: Canadian Journal of Anesthesia)

Association between postoperative hypotension and acute kidney injury after noncardiac surgery: a historical cohort analysis
ConclusionPostoperative hypotension, defined as the lowest postoperative mean arterial pressure<  80 mm Hg, was associated with acute kidney injury after noncardiac surgery. A prospective trial will be required to determine whether the observed association is causal and thus amenable to modification. (Source: Canadian Journal of Anesthesia)

Interventional pain blocks in Ontario: a population-based cross-sectional study on 2019 procedural volumes, clustering, and physician billings
ConclusionPain block administration is highly clustered in Ontario, with many patients receiving PBs in ways that are not supported by best evidence. Further research is required to determine whether the Ontario fee-for-service model of billing has created a suboptimal use of these health care resources. (Source: Canadian Journal of Anesthesia)

Regional anesthesia and analgesia in patients with spastic cerebral palsy undergoing orthopedic surgery: a historical cohort study
ConclusionDespite the use of regional anesthesia, approximately 15% of patients with spastic CP undergoing orthopedic surgery for spastic cerebral palsy experienced severe pain that responded to treatment adjustments.Study registrationCTRI.nic.in (027002); registered 5 August 2020. The association of intraoperative opioid dose with postanesthesia care unit outcomes in children: a retrospective study
ConclusionsChildren who received lower doses of intraoperative opioids did not have worse PACU pain outcomes but required fewer antiemetics and received greater numbers of nonopioid analgesics intraoperatively. These findings suggest that lower doses of intraoperative opioids may be administered to children as long as other analgesics are used. (Source: Canadian Journal of Anesthesia)

Prevention of postoperative atrial fibrillation in cardiac surgery: a quality improvement project
ConclusionsThis single-centre QI intervention increased the use of prophylactic amiodarone by 28% for patients at elevated risk of POAF, with no change in the early postoperative initiation of beta blockers (46.7% of patients by POD1). There was a notable reduction in the incidence of POAF in patients at elevated risk undergoing surgery. (Source: Canadian Journal of Anesthesia)

Higher portal venous pulsatility is associated with worse clinical outcomes following congenital heart surgery: a single-centre prospective cohort study
ConclusionsHigher portal venous pulsatility is associated with major postoperative complications in children undergoing cardiac surgery. Nevertheless, more data are needed to conclude the efficacy of portal venous pulsatility in patients with univentricular physiology.Study registrationClinicalTrials.gov (NCT03990779); registered 19 June 2019. Motivations and demographic differences in pregnant individuals in the decision to participate in research
ConclusionsThese findings can help identify areas for improvement of participation of pregnant individuals in research studies.  Demographic associations may influence participation and reasons for participation. (Source: Canadian Journal of Anesthesia)

Landiolol for the prevention of postoperative atrial fibrillation after cardiac surgery: a systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionIn patients undergoing cardiac surgery, landiolol likely reduces POAF and may reduce LOS. A definitive large RCT is needed to confirm these findings.Study registrationPROSPERO (CRD42021262703); registered 25 July 2021. (Source: Canadian Journal of Anesthesia)
